Day 160. Red-shouldered Hawk. Study from reference. Road kill is a sad fact of life here, particularly as speeding and sharp curves cut drivers’ reaction time to wildlife in country roadways. This dead hawk was a big disappointment. We’d watched red-shoulders delivering frogs & rodents to a suspected nest nearby for several weeks. When I found this dead adult in a ditch, there were a pair of recently fledged red-shoulders screaming and flapping in trees near the road. Was this a parent? Hopefully not. I take photo references for later drawing when I find these dead. A way to find some redemption out of pointless death. The reference image for this isn’t included due to the bird’s condition. (Note: no birds were handled at any time. Possession of migratory birds is illegal without permits.)

Day 158. Eastern Cottontail. Study in field plus reference. The neighborhood seems to have many cottontails munching on the lightly groomed lawns and shuttling between the hedgerows. We have heard screech-owls but the raptors with a stock-in-trade on rabbits are few.

Day 157. Gray Catbird, Carolina Wren, House Finch, Tufted Titmouse. Study in field. Finally, I’m back in the paint box! Backyard bird studies with binoculars. Color added after the fact. Pencil work is fast and light on details as I’m shifting between binocular scans and pencil sketching.
One bird that stuck out was a yellow-pigmented female House Finch.

Day 156. Blue Jay. Study from memory. Another fast pencil study was all I managed. A great day with wonderful field weather but a busy one. There are lots of maples here, but there are enough oaks to feed many blue jays, which kept my attention as much as possible.
