What you see in this photo was collected by one assistant principal in just one school year at a local high school. It does not include weapons or drugs that were seized by the police.

This is more than a collection of confiscated items — it represents the growing challenges our schools, parents, and communities face every single day. Vapes, ni****ne products, suspected THC devices, sharp objects, grinders, and other prohibited items are finding their way into our schools at alarming rates. Many of these products are highly addictive, easy to conceal, and often marketed directly toward teenagers with bright colors, candy flavors, and attractive packaging.

Schools cannot solve this problem alone. It takes parents, educators, law enforcement, and communities working together to protect our children. No single policy is a perfect solution, but small preventative steps can make a difference. Clear or transparent backpacks are not about punishment or taking away individuality — they are about creating an added layer of accountability, visibility, and deterrence.

Will clear bags stop every problem? Of course not. But if they prevent even one weapon, one v**e sale, one dangerous substance, or one tragedy from entering a school building, then they are worth considering.

Our children deserve safe learning environments where the focus is on education, opportunity, and their future — not addiction, peer pressure, or dangerous behavior hidden behind closed pockets and zippers. Sometimes the smallest steps can help start the biggest changes.

Call for Young Artists

"My Light, My Mountains"

A Children's Pop-Up Art Exhibit at Haus of Taylor
In connection with our current exhibit, Light in the Hollows, Haus of Taylor is inviting young artists to share their own creative vision in a special children's pop-up exhibit, "My Light, My Mountains".

This exhibit is a celebration of the way children see the world around them, the beauty of the mountains, the warmth of home, the wonder of light, and the stories that live in our region. We welcome artwork that reflects imagination, memory, family, nature, faith, joy, or the unique spirit of Appalachia through a child's eyes.

We invite young artists to submit original work in all mediums, including painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, sculpture, fiber art, photography, and more.

Selected artwork will be featured in a fun Saturday pop-up exhibit and open reception at Haus of Taylor, where we will celebrate the creativity of our region's young artists with family, friends, and our community.

Age Groups
Ages 5–8
Ages 9–12
Ages 13–17

Awards:
Each age group will receive:

Best in Glow Award

Theme
"My Light, My Mountains' invites children to explore what lights up their world and what the mountains mean to them. That could be a landscape, a memory, a front porch, a creek, a firefly, a family tradition, a dream, or something entirely from their imagination.

What We're Looking For
We want to see artwork that feels personal, expressive, and full of heart. This is an opportunity for young artists to share how they see the beauty, mystery, and meaning of the place we call home.

Stay tuned for more information regarding submission opening dates and exhibit information.

Please feel free to reach out to Haus of Taylor gallery director Mary Blevins at [email protected] for additional questions.
