Last night, I attended the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA-DEP) public hearing on the proposed Amazon data center project across the Delaware River to represent Bordentown City and ask questions on behalf of our community.
I asked whether PA-DEPโs environmental reviews considered the full impact of the project, how expanded emergency generator use during periods of peak electricity demand, such as heat waves, was evaluated in the air pollution impact modeling, and whether communities across the river, like Bordentown City, were considered as part of PA-DEPโs environmental reviews and permitting decisions.
Unfortunately, the hearing provided very few clear answers. One thing that did become clear, however, was that PA-DEP said it did not conduct a project-specific evaluation of impacts to communities across the Delaware River because it determined such an analysis was not required.
Just because this project is in Pennsylvania doesnโt mean its impacts stop at the Delaware River. Our residents deserve transparency, accountability, and a thorough environmental review of any project that could affect our air, environment, and quality of life.
Whatโs next: PA-DEP has announced that the formal 30-day public comment period on the proposed air permit is expected to begin July 18, following publication in the Pennsylvania Bulletin.
