Today, we recognized Commissioner Rodney Marshall on the Massachusetts Senate floor for his historic appointment as the first Black Commissioner of the Boston Fire Department in the department’s nearly 350-year history.

Today was pretty amazing getting visited by all the OGs of and for the Mass Aging Access Coalition’s Senior Advocacy Day where they shared their legislative and budget priorities. I was so happy to see my sweet Soror Ms. Taylor , my neighborhood mom Mrs. Paulding and so many seasoned seniors from Hyde Park , Mattapan , JP, Roxbury and Dorchester.

Yesterday, the Senate advanced the PROTECT Act, originally filed by the Massachusetts Black and Latino Caucus, to expand state protections for immigrants. The bill takes a number of important steps, including:

-Prohibiting arrests at schools, courts, hospitals & places of worship
-Keeping local police focused on public safety—not federal immigration enforcement
-Prohibiting new 287(g) agreements
-Preventing stops or questioning based on immigration status
-Defending constitutional civil rights

It’s our responsibility to make sure that we use our state power to fight back against ICE. Thank you to the Senate Leadership and the Steering Committee for strengthening this important piece of legislation.
