After losing the election in 2023, I chose to stay and return to the Sheriff’s Office as a sergeant — here’s why.

Am I the only elected or formerly elected official from Snohomish County representing the Everett Silvertips in Canada? I don’t know about you but that kind of dedication pretty much deserves your vote in 2027! LETS GO TIPS!!

Happy birthday to Maggie! Jill and I brought Maggie home from Blue Line K9 in Thurston County in 2020 as a pet. After raising her for a couple of years it became clear to us that Maggie needed to be working dog. We ended up connecting with the good folks at Snohomish County Search and Rescue who happen to be looking for a new K-9 tracking partner. After going through some testing and decided she was a fit for their program, Jill and I were very happy to donate her to their mission. Maggie is now a fully certfied tracking K-9 with Snohomish County Search and Rescue and has been for years.

Maggie's handler sent us this picture today of her about to get her birthday dinner! Keep up the good work Maggie!

Starting something new..Future Focused Fridays.

I spend a lot of time thinking about where things are headed — in leadership, life, and of course at the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. True leaders cannot be reactive, they have to have a vision for the future and where our agency is headed. Leadership cannot suffer from analysis paralysis, they have to be decisive and thoughtful at the same time. Leaders can take all the notes they want, watch body cam footage all day long, but both of those are reactive and do not create a vision for public safety in Snohomish County.

So every Friday, I’ll be sharing thoughts, ideas, and perspectives that keep us future focused. For the first several weeks the new series will be all about staffing as this is my highest priority.

The 1990’s style of police leadership is dead.  It is not even leadership, it is management.  It is not people focused.  In the 1990’s, when police agencies had 400 people show up to a testing day for 4 openings, you could get away with it back then.  The new generation of public safety professionals do not buy into it.

It is time for generational change in leadership at the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.  I will bring in a team with me that truly represents this next generation, and are able to understand how important culture is in our profession, but most importantly they will put people first.  When I left the Sheriff position at the end of 2023, I left the new Sheriff with 22 vacant deputy sheriff positions and we now stand at 45.  This was after she platformed her candidacy on recruitment and retention.  At what point do results matter?

Help me keep the partisan politics out of public safety and help me move the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office forward to the future.  The next generation of public safety professionals expect no less.

In police leadership circles it has been said for years, and I believe it is right, that our own people are our best recruiters. If your own people are out there working hard, having a good time, building camaraderie and furthering the mission of the agency, this will reverberate outside of your organization because others will see it and want to be a part of something special. The conversely is true as well. If this is not occurring at your agency, it will reflect in recruitment and retention. I lived this when I was Sheriff under the most difficult times in public safety history, yet we still managed to set recruiting records that shattered anything ever seen before. We built something special that people in our profession wanted to be a part of. This is missing under the current Sheriff's Office administration and we need to get it back for the sake of public safety in Snohomish County. The numbers prove it.

I chose to stay at the Sheriff's Office after the election loss in 2023 because I love our agency and I am still passionate for our people. I still recruit people, including my own family, no matter who the Sheriff is because of this belief in our Office. This is an element of leadership that you cannot replicate from behind a desk and builds trust in our people. That is one of the reasons a fellow deputy sheriff sent me the below quote on Saturday after I took an incredibly difficult patrol call. This deputy was working at a completely different precinct that day and I would have no interaction with him, but when you are doing the right thing, at the right time, for the right reasons, it will reverberate beyond a call, a shift or even a geographic location. To that deputy, thank you for the kind words.
