Brimson Area Volunteer Fire Department BAVFD is a small group of volunteers who respond to fire or medical emergencies in which one dials 911 and dispatchers summon us. The board meet monthly.

It covers approximately 365 sq. miles that includes Ault, Fairbanks and Bassett Townships along with the Toimi area Lake Co. BAVFD is a small group of volunteers that respond to any fire of medical emergency for which we are paged. It covers an area approximately 365 square miles much of which is forest or swamp! This includes the townships of Ault, Fairbanks, Bassett and unorganized areas. The pe

rmanent population of the area is 220, increasing in the summer months. Our service in on call 24/7, all members respond to calls. There are 15 to 20 calls a year, most of which are medical. Fire members show up to help on scene, control traffic, guide the ambulance or land the helicopter. We are a non-profit organization and are governed by a board of member directors. Some members are strictly fire fighters and some are strictly first responders (ems). Some are both. The department provides on the job training as well as paying for formal education as needed or required. The department provides necessary personal protective gear to the members that is needed to do their jobs and keep them safe.

🛑🔥🛑 Elevated Fire Restrictions and Severe Drought Status 🛑🔥🛑

As we head into the weekend of outdoor fun please remember we are still in a restricted burning status for our area. We are also currently in a severe drought status.

So what does this mean? I copied this right from the MN DNR Website: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/fire/firerating_restrictions.html

Elevated burn restrictions are in place in Cook, Lake and northern St. Louis Counties.

Campfires are not allowed for dispersed, remote, backpacking, or backcountry camping, whether there is a designated fire ring or not. Likewise, on state lands, campfires are not allowed in state forests, including their campgrounds, state day-use or recreational areas, or backpacking sites in state parks.

Campfires are allowed only in an established fire ring associated with a state park, home, cabin, staffed permanent campground, or resort.

No burning of brush or yard waste is allowed. Burning permits will not be issued or activated.

No fireworks may be ignited on any public or private land outside city limits. Municipalities determine firework restrictions within their borders.

Please be smart when burning and stay safe!

The Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team, under the command of the Superior National Forest and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources are aware that a medical emergency occurred on the July Lightning fires involving an individual assigned to the incident at approximately 10:40 am today, Tuesday, August 11, 2026, in the vicinity of Ely, MN.

Fire personnel and emergency medical services responded. The patient was transported to a medical facility for treatment. After arriving at the hospital, the patient subsequently passed away. When additional information is available and confirmed, an update will be provided.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and fellow firefighting community.

⚠️Campfire restrictions reduced⚠️

The DNR reduced burning restrictions effective July 29 at 12:01 am for Cook, Koochiching, Lake, and northern St. Louis counties, as well as the entirety of the George Washington State Forest and Scenic State Park, including the portions in Itasca County.

Recent rain has reduced, although not eliminated, wildfire risk in parts of northeastern Minnesota, therefore Class III restrictions remain in place for Cook, Lake, and northern St. Louis counties. That means:

➡️ Campfires are not allowed for dispersed, remote, backpacking, or backcountry camping, whether there is a designated fire ring or not. Likewise, on state lands, campfires are not allowed in state forests, including their campgrounds, state day-use or recreational areas, or backpacking sites in state parks.

➡️ Campfires are allowed only in an established fire ring associated with a state park, home, cabin, staffed permanent campground, or resort.

➡️ No burning of brush or yard waste is allowed. Burning permits will not be issued or activated.

➡️ No fireworks may be ignited on any public or private land outside city limits. Municipalities determine firework restrictions within their borders.

The DNR will continue to monitor conditions regularly and will adjust as necessary.

The MN DNR still has a burning ban in affect until further notice. What does this mean? It means no burning of any kind… not even camp fires are allowed! Please see the DNR’s website for activities that are still allowed. Please stay safe!!

⚠️ ALERT ⚠️

To help ensure public safety and protect natural resources, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is activating Class IV burning restrictions beginning 12:01 p.m., Monday, July 20, for Cook, Koochiching, Lake and northern St. Louis counties, and also including all of George Washington State Forest and Scenic State Park. While the DNR’s restrictions do not control tribal lands, these restrictions align with current burning regulations for the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

Under Class IV burning restrictions:
🔥 Campfires or recreational fires are not allowed.
🔥 Welding, acetylene torches, or other devices with open flame are prohibited in proximity to combustible vegetation, except under special permits.
🔥 Only gas or propane camp stoves may be used in the backcountry or at campsites.
🔥 Charcoal fires are allowed, in a grill designed for that purpose, at occupied homes, cabins and resorts.

Forecasts call for erratic weather, shifting winds, and the potential for isolated damaging wind gusts and thunderstorms, which will significantly challenge firefighting efforts. With little precipitation and above‑average temperatures expected, fire danger is likely to remain high until the area receives substantial rainfall. Restrictions will remain in place until lifted by the DNR commissioner.

Public safety is our highest priority. If you spot a wildfire, move to a safe location and call 911 immediately. Ensure you obey all closures.

The current fire danger is EXTREME in some Brimson areas! Do not burn, use extreme caution when running any equipment that may cause a spark, ensure trailer chains are not dragging on roadways while towing, and use an approved container for cigarette butts!!
