"Preschool years are not only optimal for children to learn through play, but also a critical developmental period. If children are not given enough natural movement and play experiences, they start their academic careers with a disadvantage."
Here is a new post from pediatric occupational therapist Angela Hanscom, author of a number of popular posts on this blog, including “Why so many kids can’t sit still in school today,” as well as “The right — and surprisingly wrong — ways to get kids to sit still in class” and “How schools ruined […...
A new preschool week means the girlies got to pick new books for our letter of the week! And we have to read about spring a little early this year because they're already seeing signs of spring on our nature walks 🐿🌸🐜 Notice baby's beautiful artwork... there's plenty more of that around our little classroom 😕😜
I ❤ Recess
When one Texas school started giving kids four recesses a day, some teachers were nervous. Would they have enough time for teaching?
This! At Centreville High School 😭❤
Allen Hulme, a student at Centreville High School in Virginia, brightens the day for the entire student body each day simply by holding the school doors open. News4's Aimee Cho talked to the special-needs...
This alphabet puzzle is her favorite. It was her big sister's favorite too ❤ Baby is learning her letters through play!
Love seeing these girlies play and learn together. Their pretend play and team work is the cutest 😍
Her first completely independent picture and label. This teacher mama is proud 😍
Whenever I'm asked by parents with children close to the cut off date, I usually recommend waiting that extra year. It can definitely make a difference!
When waiting is good.
"Mami, you're a tutor right? Me too! I toot in my room, in the bathroom, downstairs... I even toot in your bed! Ha!"
Here's a little post-lunch/pre-rest view of these girlies! We were wrapping up morning activities and getting ready for nap & quiet reading, but there's always that burst of energy in between. Can't tell if the baby is counting angrily because they're running from her or just playing along 😂
Our friend is back after a "winter break!" The girls jumped right into playing & learning together again and had an especially good time painting with a special visitor :)
Love hearing her little melodies become more and more recognizable 😍
My pre-schooler & toddler LOVE Spanish Time with Ms. Roxana!! We see her weekly at the Bull Run Regional Library and I can tell you she runs an amazing, well-planned, developmentally appropriate program for littles. Here is the information about her upcoming sessions in Alexandria:

Roxana has successfully engaged kids in a wide age-range; our last groups had children from ages 2-7. She focuses the older children with more vocabulary and deeper understanding of the subject. Older kids also help the younger ones! Love the multi-age learning. If you have concerns about your kids in the group, feel free to contact me.
Sessions normally include new vocabulary through songs, games, story time, and art projects. Parent participation is required (not a drop-off class).
All sessions will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 3421 Franconia Rd
Alexandria, VA 22310. This is a large space that works well for songs and movement!
Payment will be accepted online via Paypal. Please note a change in the payment method from previous sessions.
1. Note the amount for each class session/sibling discount - that will be the amount you send.
2. Please select "send money to friends or family" and send to [email protected]
1. After payment, please send me (Melanie) an email with the email address you used for registration (so that I know to give YOU the credit for payment).
2. Provide the session time you would like to attend
3. I will respond to your email to verify payment with the group rules and expectations. PLEASE READ the rules- the group is better for all when everyone participates and engages with their children. Parents are responsible for their children's behavior. Thanks.
Checks/cash are also gratefully accepted, but payment is required for participation. To reserve your child's space, please contact me at [email protected] for registration, questions, or concerns.
Note: Several of the class dates fall on Fairfax County & Alexandria City school teacher work days. Older siblings are welcome to attend! Please pay a drop-in fee if your child would like to participate in the class activities and art project.
Vamos a Gozar!
Their requested activity of the morning: getting decorations on the tree! Turning on Christmas music, pulling out the ornaments & chatting about colors, sizes, and shapes as we hang them up 🌲 But first... snack time! We can't work on an empty tummy 😋
Our nature walk on this beautiful fall day brought us to a playground we normally don't visit... the girls are excited!
She wanted to "do homework" so we're practicing sight words and stretching out words we don't know!
Because everyone needs a little unstructured craft time! Good for them, hard for me 😜 #glittereverywhere
The blog post I wrote 2 years ago in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month popped up! These are things we continue to do, and now her little sister likes to join in :)
We're currently raising a bilingual baby girl in Northern Virginia. Aviya's almost 2, and I would say she's mastering Spanish over English (a good thing in my ...
So many fun activities this October! What is your family excited about? We're heading to Cox Farms this week (bonus... there's discounted admission! Details in comments) I ❤ 🍁🍂🎃

Our theme this week is "A is for apple!" Today we headed to the library to learn more about apples, the life cycle of apple trees, and the 4 seasons. Then we read a Dr. Seuss favorite "Ten Apples Up On Top" and the girls drew themselves with 10 apples on their heads! Fun morning with these little ladies 😊
After our more structured "classroom time", the girls wanted to play with dolls & stuffed animals. Some of the best learning in a preschool setting happens during play time! No fancy toys required... just the opportunity to have conversations, share, and use imaginations. Love watching these little girls learn throughout the day ❤
My newest little student did so well today! She fit right in ☺ Happy first day of preschool, love bug 😍
"That’s right — your kid’s brain on Minecraft looks like a brain on drugs. No wonder we have a hard time peeling kids from their screens and find our little ones agitated when their screen time is interrupted. In addition, hundreds of clinical studies show that screens increase depression, anxiety and aggression and can even lead to psychotic-like features where the video gamer loses touch with reality."
Susan* bought her 6-year-old son John an iPad when he was in first grade. “I thought, ‘Why not let him get a jump on things?’ ” she told me during a therapy session. John’s school had begun using t…
Although still SUPER hot, we are learning about the changes we'll start to notice as fall approaches. We found a neat bird's nest & some leaves that have already started coming off the tree. Can't believe the littlest one is exploring with the big girls already! She loves our nature walks!
Why our children are so bored at school, cannot wait, get easily frustrated and have no real friends?
With my daughter officially entering her preschool years, I'm paying special attention to the things we're doing and how they're helping to "form" her into an ultimately healthy, patient, and creative school-aged child. Parenting little ones (especially incredibly strong-willed ones) is not easy!
This article has some good guidelines to take into consideration when working with littles!
I am an occupational therapist with 10 years of experience working with children, parents, and teachers. I completely agree with this teacher’s message that our children are getting worse and worse in many aspects. I hear the same consistent message from every teacher I meet. Clearly, throughout my…
Interesting read 👍
"We focus on our kids’ ability to read when they are at an age when we should be focusing on their kindness and character. We worry about overburdening them with chores because they have to do their homework, when we should be cultivating self-help skills that will make them self-reliant, and sending them a clear, unambiguous message: yes, academic achievement is important, but becoming kind and responsible is, too. These are all milestones we don’t want to miss."
"M-a-t" "M-at." "Mat." My 6-year-old pored over her Bob book, painstakingly sounding out each word. I listened and worried; her older brother was able to...
