Probably at the Library

Probably at the Library Sarcasm, snacks, and silent auctions. Flip phone still charged. Clipboard usually missing. Used to bake cookies for bands and beg Starbucks for sponsorships.

Now I bake for fundraisers and stalk the Buffalo Bills for swag to auction. Semi-retired, fully sarcastic. Always caffeinated. Always behind the scenes. Still not famous — let’s keep it that way. Known for answering my cell phone in the middle of the night (still a flip phone) just in case Guster or Little Feat has an open date. Posting about books, baked goods, chaos, native plants and community

projects — with a clipboard in one hand and coffee in the other. Probably at the library. Possibly at Jojo’s. Definitely not looking for drama.

Happened to be talking with Sarah at Lift Bridge Book Shop today and she asked if we’d be interested in a couple of these NeeDoh toys for the After Hours raffle.

I don’t fully understand the appeal. Then again, I remember paying an unreasonable amount of money for a Cabbage Patch Kid, so maybe I’m not qualified to judge. 😄

Bentley Bros, Inc., JoJo’s Bake Shop Seymour Library—help me out here. Would you buy raffle tickets for one of these? 😄

Asking before I accidentally discover another thing we apparently need.

This hits home for me. The family behind Market 1892 farms my land, and I see firsthand that keeping farms viable means preserving far more than a food source—it protects open land, wildlife habitat, wetlands and the rural character of our community.

Without farmers like Henry and the Maier family willing to keep working the land, a lot more of it would eventually become development. I’m very grateful they’re helping keep mine in agriculture.

Stopped at Bentley Bros, Inc. this morning to discuss the continuing fuel dilemma with my new friend Sara.

Good news: the tractor has diesel.
Bad news: I still have questions. 😄🚜

Sara made two tactical errors: she told us she likes social media and she has kids.

So now I’m hoping Alex approves field trips, because I have an alpaca farm to visit and it seems completely unnecessary to go alone when Bentley Brothers has a perfectly good marketing person available. 😄🦙

This is how community marketing works, right?

I've been thinking. Maybe we’ve been overcomplicating things.

Disagreements? Rock, paper, scissors.

Where to eat? Rock, paper, scissors.

Who has to make the donation pickup? Rock, paper, scissors.

Who gets the last JoJo’s cupcake?

Actually, some issues are too important to leave to chance. 😄✊✋✌️

Kari Ercolano Pardun, you have no idea what you’re missing. 😄 First Lori Skoog art class today: one of the most relaxing hours I’ve had in ages, fun, interesting people—and I left thinking I might actually be able to paint something.

These are my first fish. Lori now has me completely convinced that by the last class I’ll be painting fish that look like an actual fish.

My grandkids are going to be begging for an original for their refrigerator. 🤣🎨🐟

Community Spotlight: Jill Paladino, Strong West

Jill Paladino was born and raised in Brockport and still lives here today. She’s also Assistant Director of Business Administration at URMC, where she oversees Strong West.

Jill has been with UR for 16 years and was part of the team that helped open Strong West after UR acquired Lakeside Memorial Hospital. She remembers how connected the community was to Lakeside, so being part of that transition—and now being able to offer so many medical services locally—has meant a lot to her.

One of the things she likes most about working here is knowing the people Strong West serves. “Working here means you get to know the faces of the people we serve, and you can feel the direct, positive impact our teams make every single day.”

She’s also especially proud of the culture at Strong West and the way staff look out for one another. Jill says seeing employees work together and genuinely care about both their patients and each other—especially during difficult times—is one of the things she’s proudest of.

When we asked Jill for a photo for her spotlight, she sent us a group shot instead of one of herself. It fits—she’s quick to point out that Strong West is a team effort.

When we asked what makes Brockport special, Jill had plenty to say: our history, schools, college, library, healthcare, theater, local shops and restaurants, the canal and town parks.

“There’s really a lot that Brockport offers.”

But for Jill, it really comes down to the community spirit. Being a good community partner means listening to what people need, working together to make the area healthier, safer and more connected, and supporting local events and organizations whenever possible.

She also gave shout-outs to Seymour Library, Grinds Café, Lift Bridge Book Shop, the Strand Theater, Brockport Police Department, Brockport Community Connection and our local churches.

Some of her favorite Brockport traditions? The Holiday Light Parade, Arts Festival, shopping on Main Street, walking along the canal and the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot.

Seymour Library has been part of Jill’s family life for years, too. Her son once filled one of the library display cases with his Hot Wheels collection and was very proud to show it off. When he was younger, he also loved their weekly trips to pick out books.

Jill still appreciates that the library has something for everyone.
📚 “It’s a welcoming place for learning, curiosity, and community gathering.”

And her answer to “Brockport is special because…” may be the simplest way to say it:

💙 “The community takes care of each other.”

Tonight’s 250th Celebration plan: pajamas, Socks, fireworks, the rest of The King’s Ransom from my last Lift Bridge visit (yes, I still buy books—sometimes you just know there’s going to be frosting involved), and the half of my Coleen’s oatmeal pancake I couldn’t finish at breakfast. 😄🎆📚

Oatmeal, peaches and pecans. Practically health food. JoJo’s cupcake for dessert.

I do have one question: every time I sit in front of that pancake challenge sign, I wonder who can possibly eat THREE of these.

Brockport athletes, help me out—is carb-loading still a thing? 😂

GUESS WHERE WE'VE BEEN THIS MORNING. 😄

There are enough clues in this picture that Brockport people should be able to figure out a few stops.

Also—who knew there was an alpaca farm just down the road from JoJo’s? Haven't made it there yet, but this feels like information that may become important very soon. 🦙

The After Hours committee is officially out visiting merchants, and once again someone appears to have blurred the line between collecting donations and running errands with snacks.

How many stops can you identify? 👀
