A Brooklyn native looks to fight environmental racism through green policies in underserved communities

Growing up in Red Hook, Brooklyn, during the mid-1970s, Eddie Bautista was able to see environmental racism even though he didn't know the term back then. His neighborhood was subject to an incomplete sewer reconstruction project that left residents exposed to dozens of open sewers for years on end....

We have great news! The Climate and Community Investment Act has officially been introduced in the New York State senate as bill S4264A. Thanks to all the hard work from our coalition members, we are one step closer to creating a just transition for NYS. Every lobbying event, art action, email, and phone call has led to this moment. However, we must keep this momentum going to encourage our legislators to sign on and support the CCIA in order to ensure that corporate polluters pay for the damage they have done to our communities! Call your representatives to co-sponsor the bill here: https://www.nyrenews.org/cosponsor-ccia NY Renews

Report: New Jersey’s Dirty Secret - The Injustice Of Incinerators And Trash Energy In New Jersey’s Frontline Communities

Check out this report by
Earthjustice Vermont Law School Ironbound Community Corporation NJEJA - New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance

It calls for the decommissioning of incineration facilities by 2030, and how, in the interim, we must prioritize rethinking/reducing products and reducing waste above all in the zero waste hierarchy, while ensuring rigorous standards in the phase down of incinerators (and incineration by other names). NYC ships a lot of our waste to incinerators in other communities, including in Newark.

A new report highlights the health harms and injustice of burning trash in New Jersey’s frontline communities and calls for the elimination of “clean energy” subsidies for New Jersey’s polluting incinerators.

Biden’s Hefty Clean Air To-Do List Follows Early Big Promises

Jalisa Gilmore and Eddie Bautista quoted in this national Bloomberg News story on the Biden environmental/climate action agenda - and a report NYC-EJA released today showing air pollution 20x higher in some Bx & Bk communities than what is officially reflected in gov’t air quality testing.

Outdated emissions limits, regional underfunding, and the exclusion of long-suffering communities has left more than 150 million Americans still living under unhealthy levels of pollution, and groups are calling on President Joe Biden to fill the gaps by prioritizing air quality standards.

The Enormous Risk of Atmospheric Hacking

Eddie Bautista quoted towards the end about Gov. Cuomo’s attempted climate betrayal of NYC. In his proposed budget, Cuomo included a sweetheart exemption for the real estate industry to avoid upgrading properties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions - 70% of NYC’s greenhouse gases come from the building sector alone. Tell your state legislators if they are serious about fighting climate change & want more green jobs, to oppose this climate corruption.

Solar geoengineering is the ultimate, break-the-glass response to the climate crisis—and one we should back away from for now.
