NY-Haitian Leadership Coalition

NY-Haitian Leadership Coalition The NY-Haitian Leadership Coalition is a new leadership development program devoted to enhancing local NY-Haitian agencies and leadership while strengthening the ties between the Jewish and Haitian communities.

Overview The NY-Haitian Leadership Fellowship is a new leadership development program devoted to enhancing local NY-Haitian agencies and leadership while strengthening the ties between the Jewish and Haitian communities. The NY-Haitian Leadership Fellowship fellows are existing leaders within the Haitian community who serve in faith-based and non-profit organizations in New York. The program will run from January 2011 through June 2011, at which time Fellows will be better equipped to continue building partnerships and working collaboratively. The NY-Haitian Leadership Fellowship is generously funded by the UJA-Federation of New York. The program is in partnership with the Hope and Healing Fund and CAUSE-NY, the Jewish Community Relations Council’s (JCRC) intergroup relations division. Who We Are As the devastating tragedy of the earthquake in Haiti took place in January 2010, leaders from the Jewish and Haitian communities congregated to discuss joint communal needs and how the Jewish community could further assist locally. The NY-Haitian Leadership Fellowship initiative emerged out of these discussions, and will provide a leadership training program for NY-Haitian professionals at the executive level. What We Do The NY-Haitian Leadership Fellowship consists of leadership development seminars, which take place once a month and cover issues that are NY-Haitian community centric. Fellows also participate in a Grant Making committee, which is the “hands on” portion of the day. The fellows take on the role of funders, gaining a unique view and better understanding of the grant making process and becoming better grant writers themselves.

Mission: The NY-Haitian Leadership Fellowship provides Haitian community leaders with training in professional growth and enhancement, resource development and partnership building, while at the same time, strengthening the connections between the local Haitian and Jewish communities

On Wednesday, July 2, 2014, Marcia Landais and her two little girls, Charli and Joie Sellers, were standing at a bus stop on Flatlands Avenue in Brooklyn, NY when they were viciously hit by a criminal in a stolen mini-van and pinned under the van for over 20 minutes.

Store owners and local residents ran to the scene and lifted the mini-van to get them out. Joie Sellers, 12 -- who was a great student, a ballerina, and full of life -- succumbed to her injuries by the time police and the ambulance arrived.

Words seem inadequate to express how we feel about the tragic killing of Joie Sellers, and brutal injuries of Charli Sellers and Marcia Landais. A family is now broken due to unnecessary negligence. The NY-Haitian Leadership Coalition has created this fund to provide assistance and support for the Sellers family during this difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you for your cooperation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FREE ZUMBA AND KICKBOXING CLASSES IN EAST FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN
PROVIDED BY HAITIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY COALITION, INC. (HCC) AND EMBLEMHEALTH

Brooklyn, New York – June, 2013 – Rising obesity rates among East Flatbush, Brooklyn residents and the health challenges that come with it, has spurred the development of a free group fitness program – ‘Fitness for Flatbush.’ In 2009, 24.5% of East Flatbush residents were identified as obese and 11.8 were identified as diabetic (Center for the Study of Brooklyn, 2012), a trend that has continued to worsen as rates of obesity reach alarming heights across Brooklyn and NYS.

“Obesity is the second cause of preventable death in the United States after cigarette smoking,” said Dr. Andre K. Peck, Executive Director of HCC. “Our hope is to see people change their lifestyle from sedentary to a more active one, as well as to make better nutritional choices.”

The free group fitness program, developed by HCC and sponsored by EmblemHealth, provides weekly results-driven Zumba, cardio kickboxing and health education sessions, helping participants to set and accomplish personal fitness goals.

“We are committed to providing access to comprehensive and affordable health care and supporting community partners such as HCC in their efforts to provide preventative healthcare services,” said Eliza Ng, M.D., Senior Medical Director at EmblemHealth.

Classes will be held at the Flatbush Reformed Church gym (890 Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11226) on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7PM to 8PM, beginning Monday June 3, 2013. Participants can register for the free fitness program by contacting HCC at 718.940.2200 or via email at [email protected].

HCC is a 501(c)(3) community-based organization established in 1982, whose mission is to champion the well-being of its constituents through advocacy, empowerment, health education and supportive services. HCC is a member of the NY-Haitian Leadership Coalition.

EmblemHealth, Inc., through its companies Group Health Incorporated (GHI) and HIP Health Plan of New York (HIP), provides quality health care coverage and administrative services to approximately 3.4 million people. Groups and individuals can choose from a variety of PPO, EPO and HMO plans, as well as coverage for prescription drugs and dental and vision care. EmblemHealth offers a choice of networks, including quality doctors and other health care professionals throughout the region, leading acute care hospitals across the tri-state area, and physicians and hospitals across all 50 states.
