Green City Force

Green City Force Green City Force is an AmeriCorps program that engages young adults from New York City public housing to fight climate change through service, and prepares them for careers in the clean energy economy.
(9)

GCF's city-wide Clean Energy Corps inspires passions and a commitment to service while providing young adult residents of New York City public housing with experiences and skills to help build a sustainable future for themselves and their community. Corps Members spend four days a week in the field, where they work in teams to improve energy efficiency in low-income homes, construct and maintain urban farms and provide resident-to-resident education on sustainable practices, and one day a week in the classroom.

Mission: Green City Force trains young leaders to power a green and inclusive economy, through service. Our model corps in New York City enlists and trains young people from low income housing communities for a new and more equitable economy. We equip them with the tools to change the trajectory of their lives and access good jobs. Corps Members develop a passion for sustainability and service through driving large-scale environmental and health initiatives in public housing and other frontline communities. We design service as a path to greater well being and means to enlist young people to become contributors and leaders in the movement to build a greener, fairer and more just world. Graduates go on to jobs or college, directly or through alumni initiatives that build towards sectoral jobs and apprenticeships, via social enterprise contracts or advanced training developed with employers. Our network of alumni, partners and supporters constitutes a growing ecosystem anchored in our corps.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service our AmeriCorps Members will be at our Eco-Hub sites distributing fresh food from 11 AM to 2 PM for #MLKDay2021!

At Green City Force, we are doers. Through our work, we affirm that Black Lives Matter and refuse to resign ourselves to the ongoing oppression and discrimination against Black and brown people in this country✊🏿. Dr. King stood against the systems of white supremacy through non-violence. We celebrate the courage of all who work for peaceful and democratic change.

Every day, but today especially, we are grateful for our Corps Members, alumni, staff, volunteers, board, partners, supporters, and Green City Force family. During these past few months while still in a pandemic, our Corps Members have put in over 12,000 hours of service and harvested over 20,000 pounds of produce for their communities that most need it. We are full of gratitude and respect for our service Corps Members that have been at the frontlines serving NYCHA communities❤️.

For the past 10 years, GCF has been continuously working in partnership towards the green city we want to see. We invite you to join us in helping to shape the vision for the next ten years.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month!

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! This year’s theme is “Be Proud of Your Past, Embrace the Future". Here at Green City Force, we wanted to take this opportunity to spotlight inspiring Hispanic historical figures that used their talents and gifts in service to others!

The Hispanic Heritage observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. The September 15th date is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for the...

Green Collar Jobs: Making a Living, Forging a Better World

Join us today at 7pm to learn more about Green Collar Jobs! In collaboration with 350 Brooklyn and Brooklyn Public Library, Alumni Training and Advancement Manager Aram Marcelle will discuss the future of "green recovery" and climate-friendly jobs.

With over a million New Yorkers out of work and a steadily warming climate, our communities need green jobs now more than ever. Funeral cost for dahu, organized by Shaniese Jenkins

Dear GCF community, sharing this message from Sadiqua from our GCF team, also a member of Lawrence's family:

We know there are a lot of people asking to contribute to the family due to the shocking passing of our beloved Lawrence “Dahu” Harris. First and foremost we would like to thank you all for your uplifting words and the multiple gestures made to the family. This has been a tough fight. However, it does not go unnoticed. You are all amazing.

This go fund me page is being put into place to have a system for those inquiring about helping financially. The money will go towards his memorial which we will like to have set up for this upcoming week. We do not expect everyone to donate. Your positive words have been enough. However, this account is set up for those of you looking to donate financially. When doing so, please understand there is no amount too small. You are all a blessing. We thank you in advance!

Happy Pride from GCF! As we mark the "end" of Pride Month, we honor the work that was done before us and we commit to fighting against systems of oppression and the systemic dehumanization of Black queer lives. We remind ourselves that Pride is only possible thanks to the many trans women of color, drag queens, nonbinary folx, and butch lesbians including Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Miss Major, and Stormé DeLarverie that fought for LGBTQ+ liberation 🌈#pride #lgbtpride

To Whom It May Concern: We are a team affiliated with the New York City College of Technology and the Magnolia Initiative that is studying the effects of heat waves and the urban heat island effect in Bedford-Stuyvesant. We hope to better understand which specific areas within New York City, and particularly in the neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant, are most affected by high temperatures. We have crafted a community survey about heat wave experiences that can be completed in less than 10 minutes. As a valued Bedford-Stuyvesant community member, we believe that you should be invited to participate in this survey. By completing this survey, you are helping us improve our understanding of heat wave impacts and experiences within these communities, and we hope that our research can help improve community response to heat wave preparedness, recovery, and resilience in addition to science education and engagement. We would greatly appreciate you taking the time to complete the survey, for which the link is included below: https://bit.ly/UHIE_BedStuy_Survey Disclaimer: When completing this survey, please provide information that is true and correct to the best of your knowledge and belief.
