Assemblyman Walter T. Mosley

Assemblyman Walter T. Mosley Assemblyman for Brooklyn's 57th district representing Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, and parts of Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy. #RentAbatement/#CancelRent

Walter T. Mosley was elected on November 6, 2012 to represent the neighborhoods of Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, and parts of Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant in the New York State Assembly. In January 2013, Assemblyman Mosley cast his first career vote to pass the NY Safe Act - which enacted the nation’s toughest gun laws in New York State – and was assigned membership on the Codes, Housing, Cities, Banks, and Corporations, Authorities, and Commissions Committees. Locally, Assemblyman Mosley has collaborated with several education, and housing advocacy groups to work on issues impacting seniors, students and working families. He hopes to utilize these grassroots experiences in sponsoring legislation that is effective, transformative and truly reflective of the needs of his constituency. Assemblyman Mosley has introduced legislation to fight public employer discrimination of formerly incarcerated individuals, provide legal representation for persons facing foreclosure proceedings, and require mortgage lenders and brokers to inform potential homeowners of their Mortgage Bill of Rights. He also continues to advocate for key progressive reforms such as increasing the minimum wage and the NYS DREAM Act. Prior to his election, Assemblyman Mosley served as Special Advisor and External Relations Specialist for the New York State Senate Minority Conference and Senior Advisor to the Assembly’s Deputy Speaker. Assemblyman Mosley received his bachelor’s degree in Criminology, with a minor in African Studies and American History, from Pennsylvania State University at University Park, graduating with honors for his exceptional academic performance. In 1998, he then received his law degree from the historic Howard University in Washington D.C. Born and raised in Clinton Hill, Assemblyman Mosley is committed to passionate and substantive representation of the communities of central Brooklyn in the legislature.

Over the past couple of days, constituents in Crown Heights and Prospect Heights who requested absentee ballots have received ballots with return envelopes printed with someone else’s name and address on them. The Board of Elections claims its printer is responsible for the problems.

If you received a ballot with the wrong return envelope, email the New York City Board of Elections at [email protected] and request a corrected absentee ballot.

If you’re able, consider participating in early voting, which ‪begins October 24th.‬ We don’t recommend you mail the incorrect ballot to the person whose name and address appears on the return envelope. The envelope contains QR and bar codes that can’t be verified for accuracy and your absentee ballot may not be counted.

09/27/2020

For those of you who are planning to vote by mail, there are important deadlines and instructions you must follow to ensure that your vote is counted. Apply for your absentee ballot by October 27 and postmark or hand deliver it by November 3. Visit https://www.elections.ny.gov/votingabsentee.html for all the details. #absenteeballot #votebymail

EXCLUSIVE: Trump administration secretly withheld millions from FDNY 9/11 health program

It is good and the right thing to remember and pay homage to those who perished on this solemn day on 9/11 - but it's even better to show our respect to the fallen by doing what is right now. For these men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our city and nation deserve better. #NeverAgain #NeverForget https://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/ny-fdny-911-health-program-treasury-20200910-s7yam67j6vhmhbdzg6ordanfdm-story.html

The Treasury Department mysteriously started withholding parts of payments meant to cover medical services for FDNY members being treated by the department's World Trade Center Health Program, documents obtained by The Daily News revealed.

On behalf of all the residents of the Fort Greene community and #NYCHA tenants and neighbors, thank you to NBA superstar and Brooklyn native Taj Gibson, The Taj Gibson Foundation, and designer extraordinaire Steph Costello for bringing to life these basketball courts. The before/after pictures don’t do what you have done justice! The families of Ingersoll Houses and the greater communities of Fort Greene, and the 57th AD applaud your efforts! For so many girls and boys, basketball isn't just a court to play, it is life. And because of Poverty Geo's hard work, the Taj Gibson Foundation and Project Backboard - so many will have a place they can proudly call their own.

On this Labor Day 2020 let us never forget the role labor has and continues to play during this dark time in our nation's and state's history. If not for organized labor's dedication to our state and city, there's no telling where we would be as a people. The women, men and children of New York owe organize labor the deepest sense of gratitude and reverence on this #LaborDay2020. We honor you now and forever!

I applaud Gov. Cuomo and AG James for their absolute and necessary leadership during this time for city residents and small businesses. This was a decision that needed to be made. The sale of tax liens by the city in "regular times" is a deplorable practice and even more so during the COVID-19 pandemic. To have been considered was an abomination.

Why an Eviction Ban Alone Won’t Prevent a Housing Crisis

Now millions of renters have been covered by a national eviction moratorium, an unprecedented order by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help control the coronavirus pandemic. But there is still no money. Congress has yet to adopt a new aid package that includes broad rent relief. It hasn’t passed any other cash assistance lately either. Expanded unemployment benefits, worth $600 a week, expired at the end of July, along with a more limited eviction moratorium. There have been no new stimulus checks. And additional unemployment benefits created by executive action by President Trump have not yet reached many workers.

Renters receive more relief, but there’s a looming problem for landlords, especially those who own just a few properties.

NY Barclays Center To Become Largest Polling Site In Brooklyn starting in October, officials said. (Anna Quinn/Patch.)

BROOKLYN, NY — The biggest event at the Barclays Center this year will come in the form of New Yorkers strolling in to cast votes in the 2020 election, according to officials.

"This is the concert, this is the revolution that everybody needs to be a part of," City Council Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo said. "It's critical we come out here just as we come out to see Beyonce or Janet Jackson."

Cumbo, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, the NYC Board of Elections and Barclays Center officials revealed Tuesday that the popular Brooklyn venue will be turned into a polling site for this year's election.

The venue, which has been largely closed during the coronavirus crisis, will become the largest voting space in the borough and offer plenty of room for New Yorkers to vote safely amid the pandemic, officials said.

"The reason this location was selected is because it's safe — it's large, it's wide and we're able to practice social distancing," Cumbo said.

The Barclays Center joins a number of sports venues that will be used as voting sites for the November election, including Madison Square Garden. Converting NBA arenas into voting locations was one of the agreements between players and owners to end a recent strike, according to reports.

The Brooklyn spot, which sits at a major transportation hub above Prospect Park, has become even more of a central meeting spot for the borough in recent months, when troves of protesters used the venue's plaza for nightly protests after the death of George Floyd. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bkreader.com/2020/09/01/barclays-center-will-be-turned-into-a-polling-site-for-the-general-election/amp/

CDC Issues Sweeping Temporary Halt On Evictions Nationwide Amid Pandemic

The new eviction ban is being enacted through the Centers for Disease Control. The goal is to stem the spread of the COVID outbreak, which the agency says in its order, "presents a historic threat to public health." https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/09/01/908581048/sweeping-new-eviction-ban-from-trump-administration?utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com

The move could prevent millions of evictions that housing advocates warn are looming as people who have lost work run out of money. Landlord groups want to know who will pay for the lost rent.

I hope all is well and everyone at the office are healthy and safe. I am reaching out to you with hope of getting a law submitted. For almost 3 yrs I have been seeking help with getting a law passed, Melquain Jatelle Anderson Law, for those murdered or die of terminal illness to receive a Posthumous Degree. I have reached out to every elected official from the Governor down. PLEASE on the heels of what's going on to our people. They are being gunned down so young and dying from COVID-19. We need MELQUAIN 'S LAW. Our children go to college to make a difference in this world. My son had an Associate's in Science for Sociology and was going to get his Bachelor's at CUNY Jonh Jay College for CriminalJustice. Melquain wanted to be a lawyer and was called for NYPD School Safety. He wanted to make a difference HE DESERVES his Posthumous Degree. Please help me do this for my son, our children, for our people. This world is changing before our eyes with the divide being so openly out in the media. Police brutality/murder intertwines with gun violence. If police are not beating or killing the minorities and the poor, guns are being trafficked into the community for them to kill each other. The opportunities and resources is not there. Some can pull through the obstacles but many have so many underlining issues. Melquain wanted to be on the right side to help others. If a student is in good standards and is murdered or die from terminal illness they should be awarded their degree. They wanted to make a difference in our community whether in law enforcement or social/health issues. They should not be penalized for being murdered or having a terminal illness. Not awarding them a Posthumous Degree, which is for the dead is saying it's their fault. This is a part of reform and should be put into Law. I don't know how elected officals decide who life means more or matters to attach a name to a law. However, my son matters to me and should to you all as well. Melquain is my child and if he was yours I am sure you would want the same. Please help me make this a law. Thank you in advance for your support. Respectfully yours, Michelle Barnes-Anderson A Grieving Mother
Please join Senator Montgomery in supporting Tremaine Wright for the State Senate and Assemblyman Walter Mosley for re-election. Vote early or on June 23rd.

This took place in 2017 in the Bronx. It was reported that Ms. Caro was informed several times that a student was bringing a knife to school and threatening to harm others yet she did not follow proper procedures to prevent this tragedy and to get the student help. What is the NYC DOE saying about the value of the lives of African American and Latino children? How many effective teachers were and are dismissed without cause while administrators can place the lives of students in jeopardy even cause death and still remained employed and get promoted? Where they do that at? NYC DOE! Why is the community allowing it? Assemblyman Mosley, your office was contacted months ago via email concerning these issues because there is a blatant pattern yet you have not responded. Are the safety and welfare of our children of no concern to you?
This is my experience from Thursday night ruffly 830pm. Driving up Atlantic ave ,This car was next to me, they saw the protesters quickly took a turn to park the car. Got a sign out black lives matter. These were two white ,kids, from ILLINOIS. Here to loot our city and just cause more of a battle between black community and police. Ask yourself this, if your a professional protester from another state.you don't drive around looking for protest to join. you already know where the protest are happening at . The community we need to expose these cowards.
where's the post of the assignation of the two NYPD officers? I wanted to screen shoot it to send to the ethics committee. I can't stop wondering why you posted it but now that it's down I have even more questions... was it a heinous suggestion? I must question your motive....
That PO needs to be fired
Let’s make sure there are no rollbacks on bail reform. Let’s protect our community.
Rolling back bail reforms would be a step in the wrong direction. With everything going on we obviously need to move towards a more humane society governed by compassion, decency and actual rehabilitation instead of pretending jail will change the lives of those incarcerated in a meaningful way. I don’t want them to arrest people who steal food or commit nonviolent crimes I want them to help them and figure out what they need so it doesn’t happen again. Blacks and other minorities have suffered under bail laws that serve as debtors prisons because they make it impossible for people to pay. We can’t trust judges to make those decisions because all they’ve done is lock poor people up for decades. The reforms should not be rolled back and you should not be in support of this legislation.
