My son likes nail polish, but our relatives gift only stereotyped ‘boy’ toys. - Julie Tarney | My Son Wears Heels

What happens when your child has a gender-nonconforming holiday wish list, but your relatives always default to stereotypical “boy" or "girl" toys? Check out my advice for a thoughtful parent 🎁

Kids know what they like when it comes to toys. The more progressive among us have picked up on that. We've moved beyond the gender-stereotyped toys that limit kids' choices at play. Even some retailers have eliminated the pink aisles and blue aisles altogether, dividing toys by type instead of by g...

Transgender kids are changing the world. - Julie Tarney | My Son Wears Heels

I've been thinking quite a bit about gratitude lately: despite all this year's ongoing challenges, I am feeling fortunate for all the beautiful, brilliant LGBTQ people in my family and communities 💗

With everything that’s been going on lately, including widespread rumors that the LGBTQ community will soon be the next group threatened by the current administration’s discriminatory executive actions, I took a break from the headlines yesterday. While I will never give up championing equality ...

The list of trans folks who were taken from us this year by violence (some at hands of police) speaks to the urgency of education and advocacy in their memory. We must honor those still in need of support and services too often denied just because of who they are.

This awesome family nails how monumental Joe Biden’s mention of trans people was in his acceptance speech — especially during Transgender Awareness Month. So many families are breathing easier, knowing they’re seen, heard, affirmed, and supported ❤️🤍💙

We are the owners of Youngstown Coffee! This is our rad family. We are accomplices in anti-racism work because Black and Indigenous Lives Matter to us and we have a lot of work to do to dismantle the injustices in our country. We’re also proudly LGBTQ and raising a transgender teen who is an activist and artist. We live to protect her rights and those of transgender people everywhere. We use this platform (our cute little coffee shop) to bring awareness to our community about these issues. That may not be your ‘cup of coffee’ and that’s okay there are many other coffee shops that might suit your needs but, we hope that even if it makes you uncomfortable you will stick around and be open to possibilities. All that being said, November is Transgender Awareness Month and it was truly remarkable to hear our president-elect Joe Biden actually address transgender folks in his speech. There is still so much work to be done in achieving equality, protection, and acceptance of transgender and non-binary communities and WE ARE HERE FOR IT!!! We hope you will be too. #transgenderawarenessmonth #protecttranskids #blacktranslivesmatter #lgbtqfamily #westseattle

The first Halloween my boy wanted to be a girl. - Julie Tarney | My Son Wears Heels

Happy Halloween! Spooky season has returned, and so have costume controversies among parents and kids. This holiday — and the little Mickey Mouse seen in this photo — taught me so much about parenting, self-expression, and unconditional love.

The Monday before Halloween in 1992, my two-and-a half-year-old son Harry was curled up in a leather chair watching Disney's Peter Pan. I paused the VCR and waved the orange flyer a neighbor just delivered listing events that would turn our Milwaukee city street into a holiday theme park.

It’s been 4 years since the NYC book launch of MY SON WEARS HEELS at @bgsqd. Four years is especially significant in my heart, because that’s how old my kid Harry was when he got his very own dress-up box. Harry’s favorite area in the kindergarten classroom was, after all, the Drama Corner. That was 26 years ago! And Harry still sashays better in heels than I do. 👠💖

Congratulations to Schitt's Creek! It's a story (true and fictionalized) about humor, family, and the unconditional love of a father for his gay son:

"I also want to thank, once again, this young man who took our fish-out-of-water story about the Rose family and transformed it into a celebration of inclusivity, a castigation of homophobia, and a declaration of the power of love."

"As a dad, getting to work on camera for six years with both my kids, Daniel and Sarah, I had such a joy," said Eugene Levy
