Babies and families from all 50 states and DC are meeting with their Members of Congress for . Advocating for Black Children and families means investing in the policies and programs babies need to thrive. Our country’s 11.4 million infants and toddlers need more than just baby steps. At a time when policymakers are failing to deliver the strong policies that set families up to be able to support the healthy development of their babies, families need real investments from policymakers now more than ever.

Here is how you can demand action:
1) Tweet Congress!
2) Email your local Congressperson!

In-Person Report to the Community for Milwaukee County Healthy Start

04/15/2023

We are wrapping up Black Maternal Health Week with a post from our very own, Keisha Williams, who is our Healthy Start Therapist. Keisha works directly with the mothers that are receiving services through the Healthy Start program, and supporting any obstacles they may be facing.

Keisha offered three tips for black moms, being a black mom herself:

1. Check-in with yourself and listen to your needs. You’re not a bad mom or bad person by prioritizing your mental health!

2. It is okay not to be okay sometimes. Be honest about what you are experiencing. Be authentic with yourself.

3. Self-care is not an option, it is a requirement. You need it!!! Even if it is just 10 minutes of time to reflect on your day; your future; your plans, take it. Self-care is a lifestyle that incorporates taking care of your mind, body, and soul… You deserve that!!!

BONUS: You are more than just a Mom by title; who are you? What goals and/or aspirations did you once hold? Don’t lose yourself in being a Mom. Your children will be grown one day too!!!

An excellent opportunity!

I attended the 2nd Annual Black Maternal Health Symposium. We were able to view the documentary, “Aftershock” and continued the symposium with three of the documentary principals on a panel today. What an awesome day to learn and support each other in this work through education and advocacy.

What started in 2020 as a series of film and event programs addressing disparities in Black maternal healthcare culminated in the Black Birth Symposium & Initiative two years later.
Already one of the country’s largest maternal and infant healthcare conferences, the Symposium convenes leading healthcare professionals and community advocates to advance interdisciplinary collaborations in maternal health.

Ages one, three, five, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen and fifteen. What is the common denominator for these ages? They are the ages of Black children in Milwaukee who have lost their lives because of gun violence. What can I do? What can YOU do? What can WE do? We must protect our children! Please join BCDI-Milwaukee as we look to advance the lives of Black children and their families through advocacy and education. Membership is $60.00 annually. Change does not happen because we want it too, but it’s going to take work. And, the work will take people. Will you join the movement?
