BREAKING: Hays County Commissioners Approve Allocation of $4.5 million for 10-Year Axon AI Contract

On the same day that county commissioners passed a proclamation recognizing Homelessness Awareness Month – with public-comment speakers pleading for increased funding for social services – commissioners voted 4-1 to allocate $4.5 million towards Axon AI integration services for the Sheriff's Office.

“Every dollar that we spend on surveillance tech is money that could be going to our urgent community needs…what we don’t need to be doing is rubber stamping another contract expansion with Axon. We need to think very carefully about expanding their monopoly over law enforcement technology. Instead, focus on what is important: our community and their needs, and invest in them instead,” said Amy Kamp, a local activist.

Judge Ruben Becerra cast the lone dissenting vote against the allocation of funds, arguing that he did not trust the growing use of AI in mass surveillance: “AI is growing at leaps and bounds that we can’t even measure.”

While the funding for Axon AI has been approved, the county has yet to sign a formal agreement for the services.

¡CUANDO VOTAMOS, GANAMOS!

UNITY ISN’T SOMETHING WE SAY. IT’S SOMETHING WE DO.

At a time when Democrats in Hays County are asking how we move beyond the infighting and come together, I believe we need to get back to one of the most basic responsibilities of our Democratic Party:

GET PEOPLE OUT TO VOTE. Unity Starts at the Door.

Unity does not mean we all have to agree on every candidate, every issue, or every strategy. We are Democrats—we are going to debate, disagree, and challenge one another.

But we cannot allow personalities, factions, or political semantics to become more important than participation.

Our job as a Party is to build the table, open the doors, educate voters, register voters, and GET THEM TO THE POLLS.

Then let our candidates run their campaigns. Let them make their case. Let them inspire people. And most importantly, let the voters vote their conscience.

That is democracy.

The Tejano Democrats understand something else: we cannot talk about building a stronger Democratic Party while leaving voters on the sidelines. We have to reach the people who too often feel ignored, taken for granted, or only contacted when someone needs their vote.

We have to earn their participation.

So while others debate what Democratic unity should look like, let’s demonstrate it:

Register voters.
Educate voters.
Knock on doors.
Make the calls.
Bring new people into the process.
GET OUT THE VOTE.

There is plenty of room for different voices in this Party. There is plenty of room for disagreement.

But when it comes to defending democracy and getting people to the polls, we should be pulling in the same direction.

Lead. Follow. Or get out of the way.

Because elections aren’t won by the loudest voices in the room.

They’re won by the people who show up and VOTE.
