Ownership of an Erie County parcel on River Road has been transferred to the Town of Tonawanda, for use as a compost site.
The brownfield land at 4111 River Road will take leaves, branches and other yard debris from residents of the town and surrounding communities. The transfer was approved with an Erie County Legislature resolution in October; no money was exchanged.
The property was once a junkyard, which became the county’s land following foreclosure. The state, town and National Grid partially cleaned up contaminants, and the town will now complete its remediation.
The town will also use the site to store equipment.

It’s that time again when you set your ⏰ back Tomorrow Check …change …practice. It’s that simple. Check-your alarms monthly. Change the batteries yearly. Practice a fire escape plan.A smoke alarm should be on every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside sleeping areas. CO alarms should also be placed on every level of your home, and outside sleeping areas. Batteries should be replaced in alarms, unless the alarms have sealed 10-year batteries. Replace your smoke alarms if they are more than 10 years old. When you “change the time,” take the time to ensure your alarms for smoke and carbon monoxide are working.
