Here's some info on one of the latest social media scams, from the Erie County Office of Consumer Protection.
SCAM ALERT: Scammers Posing as Contact Tracers Scammers and thieves take advantage of every opportunity to fish for information that can be used to open up credit accounts in your name, steal directly from your accounts or to create a more elaborate scam. COVID 19 is one of those opportunities. If someone calls to report test results or to tell you that you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, please note: the only “identifying” information they will ask for is your name, address, contact phone number and date of birth. A contact tracer from Erie County or New York State will never ask for a driver’s license number, social security number, credit card or bank account information. Don't get scammed! A malicious cyber actor is spoofing a COVID-19 loan relief webpage via phishing emails. Get more information about this and other scams from the Erie County Office of Consumer Protection: www2.erie.gov/consumerprotection/covid-19
