Buffalo Waterfront

The Buffalo Waterfront and ECHDC family are deeply saddened by the news of Ric Hilliman's passing. Ric and his family own and operate some of the most iconic attractions at Canalside: the Spirit of Buffalo, Buffalo River History Tours and Queen City Bike Ferry. Our hearts go out to Kathy, Rich and the entire Hilliman family at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Captain Ric.

This afternoon our Chairman Robert Gioia, joined Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, Buffalo Heritage Carousel President Laurie Hauer-LaDuca, Senator Chris Jacobs, Assemblyman Sean M. Ryan, and Brendan Mehaffy from the City of Buffalo’s Office of Strategic Planning to break ground on the construction of the Buffalo Heritage Carousel at Canalside on the Buffalo Waterfront.
The vintage menagerie, park-style carousel was manufactured in 1924 by Spillman Engineering in North Tonawanda for Dominick De Angelis. The carousel was in operation until the 1950s at which point it was stored by the De Angelis family until Buffalo Heritage Carousel acquired it in 2016 with the generous support of the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation with a goal of providing family-oriented recreation on Buffalo's waterfront and to celebrate Western New York's industrial heritage. Governor Cuomo awarded a $1.2 million matching grant to begin the project.

The Buffalo Heritage Carousel artists continue to work on the meticulous restoration of the carousel pieces while raising funds to build, operate, and maintain the carousel. The carousel is planned to open in the summer of 2020.
