This week our Board of Directors met and approved our partnership with US Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District to begin the process of renewing the aquatic habitat at Slip No. 3, next to Wilkeson Pointe on the Buffalo Waterfront. This important project will restore ecosystems crucial to plant and animal life that have been lost or degraded in the region and help protect the area from future storm damage.

On Monday, our Board of Directors affirmed the General Project Plan (GPP) for the Buffalo Outer Harbor. This affirmation of the GPP is the culmination of six years of planning, community engagement and coordination with the City of Buffalo and other entities and outlines future improvements to the city’s Lake Erie waterfront that will build on earlier upgrades recently completed by ECHDC. This important step formally prioritizes the projects presented in the 2019 Outer Harbor Preferred Plan. Additionally, it sets forth an initial list of project components that will undergo final design in 2021, with construction starting soon thereafter.
In addition, the Board also carried several other items, including the hiring of a construction manager as well as an events and concessions manager for the Outer Harbor.

Yesterday our Board of Directors met and adopted the long term Outer Harbor General Project Plan (GPP). The Outer Harbor GPP outlines future improvements that will be made to the city’s waterfront to build on improvements that have been recently completed by ECHDC. The development plan includes recreational facilities to improve what is currently vacant, substandard or underutilized property. This adoption of the GPP is a critical legal step that establishes the budget, scope and objectives of the project and will allow ECHDC to move the project into its construction phase. The GPP is being made available for public review and comment prior to affirming the plan, which is anticipated in early 2021. For a link to view the GPP, please visit:

This morning, ECHDC President Steve Ranalli joined Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, Congressman Brian Higgins, and Assemblyman Sean M. Ryan to cut the ribbon on our new “Longshed” building at Canalside’s Central Wharf. The two-story, wood structure reflects the site's history by incorporating elements from the Joy and Webster Storehouse located there in the early 1800s. The approximately 4,400-square-foot building includes a small mezzanine level; public bathrooms; roll-up entry doors; and an exterior porch that overlooks the Canalside lawn.
The wood-frame building will initially be used by staff and volunteers from the Buffalo Maritime Center to construct a replica of the 1825 Seneca Chief packet boat, which transported Governor DeWitt Clinton from Buffalo to New York City to mark the official opening of the Erie Canal. The packet boat project is expected to take about three years to complete. During that time, the public will be able to watch the boat being built and even volunteer to join the construction crew!

This afternoon our Chairman Robert Gioia, joined Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, Buffalo Heritage Carousel President Laurie Hauer-LaDuca, Senator Chris Jacobs, Assemblyman Sean M. Ryan, and Brendan Mehaffy from the City of Buffalo’s Office of Strategic Planning to break ground on the construction of the Buffalo Heritage Carousel at Canalside on the Buffalo Waterfront.
The vintage menagerie, park-style carousel was manufactured in 1924 by Spillman Engineering in North Tonawanda for Dominick De Angelis. The carousel was in operation until the 1950s at which point it was stored by the De Angelis family until Buffalo Heritage Carousel acquired it in 2016 with the generous support of the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation with a goal of providing family-oriented recreation on Buffalo's waterfront and to celebrate Western New York's industrial heritage. Governor Cuomo awarded a $1.2 million matching grant to begin the project.
