Erie County prepares for strict enforcement of restaurant regulations

Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein said county health sanitarians will continue to investigate complaints of restaurant and bar violations of capacity and social distancing rules.

"If we receive a complaint from a member of the public who is concerned that a restaurant is not in compliance, we will investigate and inspect, and there could be consequences," she said.

Out for summer, schools turn to a question: How to reopen?

“What are the rules?” said Robert Lowry, deputy director for the New York State Council of School Superintendents. “We don’t have any clarity yet on what to expect.”

For example, having students attend school on alternate days or extending the school day, so half can attend part of the day and the rest the other, have been floated as possible solutions.

“You can’t plan very much until you know what the rules are and also what your resources will be,” Lowry said.

If – or when – school resumes in the fall, it likely will be very different.

Unlike prior last days, the Covid-19 pandemic has made this one much less ceremonial and much more fraught with conflicting emotions.

Prevention begins and ends with parenting. Children of parents who engaged in parenting behaviors and practices generally recognized as supporting their healthy development rarely hurt themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and the National Institute of Mental Health should be working furiously to find ways to improve the overall quality of parenting in the U.S. Perhaps parenting education campaigns akin to the smoking and seatbelts campaigns of the past. Visit www.advancingparenting.org. In our own unique way we have adopted this approach to primary prevention. Please share. 🙂
