We are excited to invite you and your students to the 2020 Youth Voices Conference at Buffalo State College on Thursday, May 7th from 4:00PM to 8:00PM!

The Youth Voices Conference showcases the work young people have created in middle school and high school English classrooms throughout Western New York and beyond. We are excited to announce that this year, the conference will also include innovative presentations developed in local social studies, science, and math classrooms. The conference seeks to reclaim space for the voices of youth and their teachers, and to reposition classrooms as learning spaces of meaning, purpose, and power.
This year's event features a keynote address from Adam Zyglis, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist from The Buffalo News. Additionally, Sage Edgerton, local spoken word artist and published poet, will perform her original poetry. We are also showcasing local student musicians and student artwork created in art classrooms across the Buffalo-Niagara region. Dinner will be provided for all attendees.
We would love for you and your students to participate. See below for presentation and registration information:

Our 45-minute sessions typically feature three, 10-12 minute student presentations, with a few minutes built in for questions and discussion. In previous years, we have had teachers organize six shorter presentations into one session, one 45-minute presentation with many students, or any mix in between.
If you have questions about the format or would like to discuss specifics about the presentations, we have a professional development event coming up TOMORROW - Thursday, February 27th, from 4:00PM to 6:00PM in Ketchum 118.

Please submit student presentation proposals using this Google Form:
https://forms.gle/BSEiWv3gA9Q2JLDh7
Registration must be completed by Friday, April 10th.

Please register for tomorrow’s professional development event here:

Please contact us with any questions. For more information about the event, please visit our website here:

Eighth-graders visit Buffalo State through College Readiness Program

Honored to have the College Readiness Program featured in the Amherst Bee.
Buffalo State English Education's partnership with JFK middle school has been enriching for both college and middle school students. Not only do aspiring teachers have the opportunity to work with students, but middle school students have the opportunity to see what life is like on a college campus.
“This visit through the program is really a highlight of the year for these middle school students,” said James Cercone. “A lot of them will be the first in their families to attend college, and by truly showing them what a positive experience being on a campus can be, they can strive for excellence.”

We hope you can join us on Thursday, March 12th from 12:15-1:25PM in Ketchum 313, for our annual English Education Student Association Alumni Speaker Series. English education alumna Pam Fordham will present her talk, Lessons from the Back of the Bus: Empowering Students to Talk About Race in America. She will share teaching experiences, instructional practices, and student work created in her Race in America elective. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Please feel free to share the attached flyer with your colleagues and students. We hope that this event will encourage cross-discipline dialogue. Presentation Overview: For many students, having discussions about race can be difficult. Despite the prevalence of stories related to race that have become a part of our lives and identities as Americans, some students learn to avoid the topic completely. The purpose of this presentation is to inspire future teachers to create opportunities for students to have meaningful discussions about the role that race plays in our everyday lives. The presentation will highlight activities and resources from Ms. Fordham’s Race in America elective at Amherst High School and offer other practical ways teachers can empower students to play an active role in shaping the ever-evolving impact of race in America. Pam Fordham’s Bio: Ms. Fordham is a teacher at Amherst Central High School. Prior to Amherst, Pam taught at City Honors, Hutchinson Central Technical High School, Seneca Vocational High School, and Frank Sedita School #38. She has served as co-editor of the newsletter of the Amherst Education Association, and has also co-advised the Cultural Unity Club. In 2006, Pam started Covenant in Action (C.I.A.), a club for African American students. Pam has published articles, reviews, and essays in the Afro-American Historical Association’s Journal of Afro-American History. She also compiled a collection of her own poetry and essays in Woman dedicated to her daughter in 2008, which was adapted into a play. Ms. Fordham is the winner of the 2019 Western New York Network of English Teacher’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Hope to see you there!
