10/31/2023

Commissioner Angela Marinucci discussed all things Risotto during the University Express “Cooking With the Commissioner” class at the Hamburg Senior Center last week. If you’re not familiar, Risotto is a starchy rice that is naturally gluten-free and lower in carbs than other rices. Often mistaken for pasta, Risotto is thick in consistency and is commonly used to make delicious Italian dishes. Risotto also has a reputation for being intimidating to cook and for taking longer to prepare.
Jim was one of our class co-instructors. He is the Senior Services Nutrition Program’s Assistant Project Director and also happens to be a Professional Chef who once owned a restaurant in Buffalo’s Allentown District. Together, they shared trips and tips on prepping, preparing, and storing Risotto to help remove some of the stigma around preparing the staple dish. They also touched on food safety, cookware, induction, gas, and electric stovetops. Our door prize winner got to take home their very own thyme plant!
Our Nutrition Coordinator John also shared a E A S Y and D E L I C I O U S recipe for Mocha Yogurt & Raspberry Parfait. And of course, there was taste testing!
University Express classes are FREE and There a few more Cooking With the Commissioner classes coming up this Semester at various locations throughout Erie County. If you’re looking for dates, times and locations, visit the course catalog here: https://www4.erie.gov/universityexpress/classes.

Fun times this afternoon with The Buffalo Urban League! Our friends at this site weren’t able to make it to our annual Summer Picnic this year due to a bussing issue, so today we brought the picnic to them! There were some intense rounds of Jenga, music, and County Executive Mark Poloncarz stopped by to show off his dance moves!
The Stay Fit Dining Program provides warm nutritious lunch time meals to adults ages 60 and older. It’s a great way to build social networks and reduce isolation. If you or someone you know might be interested in joining the Stay Fit Dining Program, contact your nearest Senior Center or give us a call at 716-858-8526.

Congratulations again to our friend Richard “Mr. Fitness” Derwald on his induction into the National Fitness Hall of Fame as one of America’s Top 100 Fitness Professionals! He is the creator of the Club 99 Fitness Program and at 88 years of age, he is walking example of how physical activity is important to maintaining quality of life and overall wellness. We honored Richard at the Clarence Senior Center with a small celebration during which Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz proclaimed October 20th as Richard Derwald in Erie County. We also awarded him with the Erie County Senior Services Champion Belt! But most importantly, there was cake!
Richard, thank you for all you have done and continue to do to inspire us ALL to maintain an active lifestyle!
