Black Love Resists In the Rust

One of our organizers, Mari Smith, spoke with 7 Eyewitness News WKBW about what folks can do in this moment to advance racial justice: listen to Black voices.

White people:
“Make sure you are following the lead of our voices and what WE need to get done and not going ahead and doing what YOU feel needs to be done."

"This is why, Buffalo.
[Please do not share -- *****Copy and Paste to Trick the Rhythm*****]
If you don’t understand why people are protesting in Buffalo, maybe you should think about how:
-Buffalo is still one of the most segregated cities in the entire country
-More than 30 people have died in Erie County jails since 2005. That’s 1 person every 6 months before Covid
-In 2016, India Cummings died at ECMC of a pulmonary embolism with kidney failure, dehydration, and an untreated broke arm NYS Commission of Corrections called her treatment at the Erie County Holding Center “so grossly incompetent and inadequate as to shock the conscience."
-Buffalo police officer Cariol Horne lost her job and her pension after stopping a fellow officer from choking an unarmed black man in his own home. The officer she stopped later spent 4 months in jail for shooting 4 black teenagers with a BB gun
-in 2017, Pito Rivera was running away from officers, having already thrown away the weapon he was suspected of having, when he was shot in the back.
-In 2017, Wardel “Meech” Davis was in police custody when he stopped breathing. There were no body cams, there were not witnesses. There was no accountability.
-Just two weeks ago, a Buffalo police officer was filmed repeatedly punching a black man in the face during a traffic stop. He has a broken eye socket and shoulder blade
Our justice system is broken. Our neighbors are suffering. I’m sure there are other people who can/have said this better, but I’m tired.
This isn’t just about George Floyd
It’s about Cariol Horne
It’s about Wardel Davis
It’s about Pito Rivera
It’s about Jose Hernandez-Rossy
It’s about India Cummings
It’s about Quentin Suttles
No justice, no peace"

The 5pm Sat 5/30 event at City Hall today is not organized by the WNY Peace Center, nor do we know the organizers. We have not seen any indication that it's organized or endorsed by any local groups. We are organizing another Speakout on Ethical Peace Officers, details to be publicized on Monday. We work with determination to end racism, injustice, domination, and violence. #BlackLivesMatter #SayTheirNames #EnoughisEnough #Unite

George Floyd’s death by Blue Plague in Minneapolis was widely condemned by the same parties that have encouraged and funded the spread of the fatal contagion. “The Blue Plague is a serial killer that dates back to the slave patrols of the pre-Civil War South.”

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH The greatest country in the world. A global power like no other. Who built this country ? The Europeans who raped and massacred the Native American people and took their land ? The wealthy white men who drafted a declaration ? No. The real work has been done by those who were not considered Americans. Not people but chattel. Black men and women forced to work. Overworked. Beaten. Raped. Now, leaders will say everyone is free. There is no slavery. Is systemic inequality not modern slavery? Does economic injustice not create an insurmountable divide ? We are told this country is a Democracy. This seems further and further from the truth. I see voter suppression. I see unequal representation. I see the rise of a dictator. It is said that talk is cheap. But some words cause more hurt than any one blow. When those in power normalize racism and degradation, the populations follow their lead. Words become actions. What happens when a despot tries to instill his bigotry and immorality ? What happens when the people decide that enough is enough ? Revolution. Not for the first time, we are at a fork in the road. Will we allow the oppressors to continue to suppress our anger and rights for all ? Will they keep their power ? Or will we rise against the regime of hatred. Will we fight for basic rights for our neighbors, our fellow human beings ? Today is too dangerous. We have those in power who will only move us backward. We have a President who does not unite us as a people. Instead, he actively divides. He normalizes and encourages hatred, racism, and white supremacy. When will this end ? How many have to die before anything changes ? No longer can we wait. Now is the time to revolt. Enough is enough.
Will there be a march to protest Mr. Floyd's murder?
