The WNYPC supports the CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair). This is a relatively new law (passed summer 2020 in NYS) that prohibits race-based hair discrimination, which is the denial of employment and educational opportunities due to hair texture or protective hairstyles - including braids, locs, twists, or bantu knots.

To learn more about this act and support its implementation around the nation, please visit thecrownact.com

ON THE LINE: FFI's Hotline Leader Talks About Connecting with People in Detention

"In 2013, Freedom for Immigrants launched its National Immigration Detention Hotline. Featured on the TV show Orange Is the New Black, the hotline receives between 600 and 14,500 calls per month in a variety of languages and relies on the services of multilingual volunteers across the nation.

The hotline monitors reports of abuse, connects detained people with family members, provides advocacy, and enables people in detention to share their stories.

We call rice ‘Akshat’ -- the permanent, everlasting, unbroken, undamaged, whole. India is the centre of diversity of rice. Also definitely a booby prize, as well a a dodo award (from our lips to God’s ears...).

In a newly released, weird, self-promotional propaganda video, Donald Trump seems to suggest that he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his foreign policy work. Not only was he not so honored, but Trump's video uses an image of the wrong medal in making the false boast.

Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley said Wednesday he will object when Congress counts the Electoral College votes next week, which will force lawmakers in both the House and Senate to vote on whether to accept the results of President-elect Joe Biden's victory.

I just wanted to share something with you. I'm sixty five years old and just found out something that hit me to the core. One of my favorite sons, my brother who is sixty nine and a teacher was shocked when I told him what it was about. Well I tell you. I've been singing and dancing to the song Electric Avenue for decades, blissfully unaware it was about apartheid. What rock was I living under. I found out a few days ago and been having the song swimming in my head feeling like a complete uncaring idiot and crying to a joy that used to bring me so much joy. Will I ever feel the same way again. It's hard for me to write this. Embarrassing to the max, but I need to admit it. The end of apartheid was wonderful but there's just so much Injustice still in this world and there's still so much inequality. Sure there are laws on the books, but that doesn't change what's in people's heads. So much isn't taught in the school. So much that doesn't effect a certain tribe so to speak isn't even included in their thought process. Until everything and everyone cares about everyone everywhere, I'm afraid we still have so much farther to go.
Good morning, can you please let me know if tonight's seminar with Cornell West via Zoom is going to be recorded for those who cannot watch it live? Thank you.

We need community input. Please share with your networks. Children need BPD policy changes too. The Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo, Inc. in conjunction with The Osborne Association is looking for parents who have been arrested in front of their children, for adult children who witnessed their parent’s arrest, or witnessed police search their homes to share their experiences. The information you share will be used to develop child sensitive arrest policies and training for the BPD. First-hand accounts are critical in developing policies and proper training for police. If you would be willing to share your experiences and your thoughts as to needed reform in the above areas please contact Paul Curtin, Esq. at [email protected] no later than October 31, 2020.
