Groundbreaking at STAMP

Exciting times in Genesee County! This morning we broke ground at STAMP, ushering in Plug Power and their $232 million investment in green energy. Through incredible work by the Genesee County Economic Development Center and the Town of Alabama, Genesee County is welcoming a new wave of extraordinary innovation. I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to support this vital partnership and look forward to bolstering further development in WNY in the months to come.

Our local educators have done an amazing job keeping students engaged while simultaneously navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this week I had the pleasure of joining Williamsville South to celebrate their new music and arts facilities. Additionally, I met with Daemen College to discuss how the State Senate can continue being an ally in the pursuit of education. From additional funding for classes in the arts to an increase in collaboration with local private colleges, there is much to be done in the 2022 Legislative Session.

Poloncarz vetoes law allowing children ages 12 and 13 to hunt deer with guns

The decision from County Executive Poloncarz to veto a measure that would have expanded youth hunting is short-sighted and in direct contrast with the area’s views. Erie County is one of the largest counties in terms of hunting license purchases. Additionally, in my 2021 district survey, 76% of hunters polled supported lowering the big game age! Deterring youth participation is a mistake and further promotes the fallacy that hunting and gun violence are intertwined. Hunting and outdoor recreation are critical formative activities that teach youth about the proper maintenance and handling of a firearm. I encourage County Executive Poloncarz to take a hunter safety course so that he might better understand the education he is withholding from our future hunters.

The Erie County executive said there was an "inherent danger" in allowing children 12 and 13 years old to shoot deer with a firearm or crossbow.

October is Fire Prevention Month! As the winter months fast approach, it is important to check in-home safety equipment such as smoke alarms and fire extinguishers to ensure they function properly. Together we can protect our communities and ease the burden on our local first responders!

Additionally, I hope you will join me in supporting legislation to help our local firefighters. Currently, I co-sponsor several bills that help fire departments recoup service costs and recruit members for the firefighting field. Keeping our departments viable is critical for community safety. For more information, visit https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation.

Community Update: The last several weeks have been a whirlwind of activity in the 61st Senate District. One of the lessons the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us is that the value of community cannot be overstated or taken for granted. I am proud to say that our WNY neighbors continue to rebuild and support each other, as evidenced by the fantastic events across our region. From classic car shows in Pembroke to discussions with constituents at the Naval Park, I am honored and humbled by the spirit of our great communities.

I am proud to announce that recently, I had my first pieces of legislation signed into New York State law. Helping first responders is always a priority and I am honored to have gotten this legislation over the finish line.

NY State Senate Bill S7370

Today is Constitution Day, on which we commemorate the signing of a document that protects the rights of every American! New York is one of a few states which does not currently have September 17 established as Constitution Day. In the State Senate, I sponsor a bill to change that. Click the link below for more information.

Commemorates Constitution Day on September seventeenth.

Hochul’s first bill suspends state’s Open Meetings Law

Last week Democrats in the New York State Legislature pushed through a provision that alters how the public participates in government. I raised concerns about this process on the Senate floor, noting that a change to the Open Meetings Law has no business in legislation aimed at addressing evictions. Additionally, I am particularly concerned with the impact on those constituents who lack appropriate connectivity. Despite the resignation of Andrew Cuomo, it is clear that Democrats in the legislature are intent on operating with the same playbook, legislating at break-neck speed with little regard for those impacted negatively.

The provision was stuffed into a bill extending the state’s moratorium on evictions.

Today is Women’s Equality Day, marking the 101st anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification. The courageous organizers of the women’s suffrage movement made it possible for our mothers, daughters, and all women to exercise their civic rights and become leaders in our communities. I continue to draw inspiration from their efforts and the efforts of the powerful women in my life. My mother, former Senator Mary Lou Rath, and my wife Amy motivate me every day to continue fighting for equality, as do my daughters.

This past weekend’s Veterans memorial in Amherst was an incredibly solemn and inspirational event. The freedom we all too often take for granted has indeed been paid for with the ultimate sacrifice. My thoughts this week are with those who have dedicated their lives in defense of American values and principles, especially with the men and women who continue to honor our great nation through military service.

What happened to my post? Please tell us why you couldn't get the NY Health Act out of the Health Committee to the floor.
Who on the Health committee were resisting forwarding the NY Health Act to the floor? We need it forwarded to the floor when the remainder of the session resumes at the end of the year.
Thank you for fighting for our freedoms in NY state! I hold Governor Cuomo responsible for the injustices surrounding my mother's death in February in Unity Hospital in Rochester, NY. I also hold him responsible for the continuation of the injustice of mask mandates in NY state, especially for school age children. Please fight to rid the state of this oppression!!
No to S75! Our medical records should be private!
Passing this is just stupid and irresponsible. At a time when so many mass shootings are occurring; do we really need to encourage more young people to use weapons for "entertainment"? Think about the 13 year old in Chicago that was killed by police because he held a gun! Offer our youth alternate ways to expand their mindset like helping wildlife and respecting all life instead of ending it!
Those in Albany that believe in big government are running this state and have wasted and misused our tax dollars for decades, not to mention the power of the teachers unions and the unions in general. There is no hope for this state to be turned around until those in Albany are not reelected. The residents of this state need jobs not government handouts that create government dependency. The stimulus money only gives a short burst of a economic boost, when the money is spent the boost is gone. Jobs are the answer.
A recent email from the Senator talked about New York State's high tax rates. I've always heard this, but recently experienced the difference when my daughter was looking at buying a house in Seattle, WA. The house was listed at $525,000 and had a yearly property tax of around $1,300, compared with my valuation of about $180,000 and taxes of $4,000. She said whenever the politicians try to raise taxes there, the citizens file petitions to vote on the increases and most of the time vote them down. What a difference from New York.
I want to vote for Ed Rath, and will if He is pro life. I can't seem to find a way to find out.
Great Photo!!
All the Best in 2018, Ed!!! Hello from Switzerland!
