Since 2009 PUSH Buffalo has been working diligently in establishing and promoting green infrastructure throughout the City of Buffalo. Following the success of our neighborhood-scale projects on Buffalo’s West Side Green Development Zone, PUSH’s community development arm the Buffalo Neighborhood Stabilization Company started PUSH Blue in 2013 - creating a team of talented people to address the sustainable landscaping needs in and around Buffalo. Today, PUSH Blue continues to bring education, expertise, experience, and a thorough understanding of sustainable design and implementation to every project that we undertake. We focus our work on projects that are responsible to our communities, our clients, our workers, and our environment. PUSH Blue has been a leader around addressing Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) and promoting ecological landscape practices. PUSH Blue has been responsible for a range of managed landscape projects that have included the construction of rain gardens, green roofs, permeable parking pads, bioswales, environmental stormwater solutions on vacant lots, and large-scale community gardens. PUSH Blue also recently completed bio-retention installations on 221 sites (19 acres) post-demolition sites throughout the City of Buffalo in partnership with the Buffalo Sewer Authority. PUSH Buffalo in all of its work has been engaged in resiliency planning and engagement including a wide array of efforts around education, outreach, and planning to communities through the City of Buffalo. Within the green infrastructure and eco-landscaping space that has included development of outreach materials, a rain barrel distribution program, and training programs for green infrastructure training and maintenance. PUSH Buffalo currently employs an eco-landscaping team that has extensive training and experience in implementing sustainable landscape systems and stormwater management projects. Every member of our PUSH Blue crew both receives and can provide green training and education to support holistic consideration and implementation of each of our projects. Such efforts are part of PUSH’s overall community jobs pipeline strategy of engaging low-income workers of color and disconnected workers in the effort to establish an equitable community-controlled green economy. One of the driving principles at #PushBuffalo and #PushBlue is that what we do to the planet 🌍🌎🌏, we do the people and life who cultivate it. Our farmers are facing another challenging season. Although many outdoor festivals have been cancelled or postponed, most state parks are keeping their grounds open during daylight hours seven days a week. If nature preservation and conservation spark your interest, there are many ways to have an immediate impact. In fact, our friends at Buffalo Niagara Waterkeepers have an invitation for you.

The rain in Spain: how an ancient Arabic technique saves Alicante from floods

We love this article about cities in Spain "remembering our way forward," showing that holistic nature-based practices are a better and cheaper solution to water management needs and climate change, in addition to other benefits to people and the environment like pollinators and green space.

“The need for sustainable management has forced us to recover ancestral practices,” says Jorge Olcina, professor of analytical geography at the University of Alicante. “You could say that these rainwater storage facilities in Alicante and Barcelona are the new aljibes of the 21st century.”

To protect itself from destructive flooding, the city has built a park designed to store and recycle rainwater

Cooperation Buffalo and PUSH Buffalo announce 12-week Cooperative Academy

Thinking about starting a business in line with your values? Check out the Co op Academy!

"We know that the extractive dig-burn-dump economy leaves the planet sickened and people exploited. We also know that the people closest to problems have the best solutions. Worker-owned cooperatives put workers in control of their workplaces and return our economy to be in harmony with community needs and collective solutions,” explained Andrew Delmonte, Director of Cooperative Development for PUSH Buffalo and Cooperation Buffalo.

There's a new movement afoot that intends to help roll out worker-owned cooperative businesses in Buffalo. This city was once home to a lot more cooperative businesses, and hopefully this initiative will see those numbers rebound. Co-op models of business add great economic diversity to cities. Take

Five Points Bakery

Buffalo’s first, code approved grass parking lot at Five Points Bakery is one year old today.
It can absorb 3” of rainfall keeping water out of our storm sewers.
It reduces heat island effect, provides habitat for insects, helps mitigate global warming by converting carbon dioxide into oxygen, looks nicer for our neighbors, helps to filter the water to keep our oceans cleaner. its cheaper than concrete, stronger than asphalt, and so much more.
We are so happy and thankful to be able to keep pioneering in Buffalo.
More to come!

PLANTS Improvise, adapt and overcome

"In a way, the Chernobyl disaster reveals the true extent of our environmental impact on the planet. Harmful as it was, the nuclear accident was far less destructive to the local ecosystem than we were. In driving ourselves away from the area, we have created space for nature to return".

How does a goldfish end up in the Niagara River? Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) can cause the things that we flush down our toilets to end up in our waterways.

In older cities like Buffalo, rain running into street drains and sewage from homes and businesses enter shared pipes underground. During heavy rain events, the combined system cannot hold all of the water entering the pipes. This can cause the sewage and storm water to overflow into the waterways before it makes it to a water treatment facility.
