Seoul for Bikes When you ride a city for a few days, you start to feel it in your pores. You learn how to deal with certain things. You hear it talk to you, give you direction. I saw this guy in Montreal in 2017 at the messenger world championships. He looked Asian, but not Japanese. When I had been a courier, the only couriers that came from Asia for the worlds were the Japanese and the Australians. Ever since I’d been keeping a stat sheet on where couriers were from, from the time that I had helped organize world championships in the states, I was always curious to find out the new countries where courier companies were sprouting up. The evolution of self-propulsion has levels. It has textures and different states of mind. It was a little embarrassing. It was the Wednesday night dinner at my friends’ house. It was a group messenger dinner in SF and there were about 15 of us. It was off to a great start. Bike racing is hard. I tried it. Wasn’t particularly good at it. To get into the top echelons, you have to dedicate yourself to riding about 500 miles per week, if we’re really being serious about it. I’ve done a lot of sports, they’re all hard, that’s the point. That’s why you practice and train, to get the competitive edge, both in endurance, stamina and quickness, but also getting fluent in the language of that sport. [ 3,789 more words ]

I got my first custom bicycle frame last summer. I have been riding bikes for 35 years and this was the first time when I got onto a bike, and it felt like it fit. Pretty matters. It gets you jobs, it gets you attention, it gets you a wider array of potential mates. When you are pretty, or at least attractive, the people who are in charge, including women, have a subliminal bias for it. When you are not the ideal youthful flower of a woman, you have to work a whole lot harder. It is really fun to drive a nice car really fast listening to loud music. Not good to do it while driving on snow, or ice, or when there are a lot of other cars around. It's really bad to do it when there are a lot of pedestrians and cyclists. It's fair to say, as fun as it is driving a car really fast to loud music, it's really un-fun to hit some innocent person and kill them with your car and then land yourself in jail or prison. The projects they come up with often costs hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars. Nearly twenty years ago, in 2000, Philadelphia's couriers hosted the Cycle Messenger World Championships. It's an interesting story, the original hosts of the championships were supposed to be Boston but after a Boston courier hit a jaywalking pedestrian and the ensuing municipal fury, any hope of securing permits for a championships was out of the question. It was the winter of 2000, six months from the scheduled date, the Boston couriers were forced to forfeit their championships, heartbroken, they made the announcement to the world and a lot of us thought we might be skipping a year. When I told some of my friends I'd been r**ed, they offered to kill the guy. It was a credible offer, they were in circles that could accomplish such things. I considered filing a police report, getting a lawyer and going to court. I did none of those things. My friends, I declined, with appreciation. I paint on the street. I paint crosswalks, I paint bump-outs, Sharrows and Bikons. As I concentrate on making my lines straight, having enough paint on my tools, people drive and walk by yelling their approval. I've taken to calling the phenomenon - "Drive-by Accolades." To a lot of people, the word Gentrification, signifies the revitalization of forgotten and neglected neighborhoods. It has been portrayed, largely, as a positive phenomenon in urban cores. On the face of Gentrification it is a positive reincarnation of neighborhoods that have had a steady decline and the triumph of creativity and civic awareness.
