Choppafellaz, 3251 Bailey Ave, and Cut it Close, at 144 Allen St, both in Buffalo, are partnering with local community based organizations to offer a back-to-school discount on haircuts. The generous $5 off on haircuts will be given to anyone who meets confidentially on-site with an outreach worker from the partnering organizations to obtain a free confidential HIV test. Indeed, the event will take place on Thursday, September 6th, from 3 to 5pm, to coincide with the start of the school year. Outreach workers and HIV testers on hand, partnering with Choppafellaz and Cut it Close, will include people from Evergreen Health, Community Access Services, MOCHA, ECMC, Kaleida Health Youth Link, Harvest House, Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York, Erie 1 BOCES/Leaving Our Legacy, and Erie County Department of Health. In addition to HIV testing, outreach workers will be on hand to discuss and make referrals for PrEP[1] and PEP[2], and to explain the benefits to the community from U=U[3].”
**The $5 haircut discount that is applied comes directly from each individual barber’s pockets, demonstrating their interest in and commitment to the community, and their desire to end the HIV epidemic.

International Overdose Awareness Day 8/31/2018
Candlelight Memorial Remembering Those Lost to Opioid Addiction

ERIE COUNTY, NY—On Friday, August 31st at 6:30PM, the third Candlelight Memorial will be held at the LaSalle Park Pavilion Bandshell. The event, occurring on International Overdose Awareness Day (“IOAD”), is a time to remember loved ones, neighbors, colleagues and friends who succumbed to the disease of opioid addiction. The Candlelight Memorial is sponsored by the Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force’s Family and Consumer Support and Advocacy group. Their goal is to save lives while erasing the stigma of addiction, and to educate the community to treat addiction as a chronic disease, “substance abuse disorder”.

“This memorial provides the opportunity for participants to engage in a reading of names of those we have lost, share reflections, gather information on overdose prevention, addiction/recovery and family resources, and learn about advocacy efforts,” said Dr. Gale Burstein, Erie County Commissioner of Health.

IOAD is a global event held each August 31st to raise awareness of opioid overdoses and spread the message that the tragedy of overdose is preventable. For more information on IOAD, visit www.overdoseday.com.

New this year, we will recognize Buffalo Police Department officers who saved lives by administering naloxone to an individual overdosing on opioids.

All are welcome to attend; especially those touched personally by the loss of a loved one or are currently dealing with the active opiate addiction of a loved one.

Believe it or not, it's time to start thinking vaccinations for the next school year! Beat the rush--make an appointment with your Pediatrician now to ensure your children are protected.

For the 2018-19 school year:
One dose of meningococcal vaccine is required for students who will be in 7th, 8th or 9th grade. If your child had the first dose before 7th grade, then another dose is not required until 12th grade.
Two doses will be required before 12th grade. Most students entering 12th grade got their first dose when they were
younger and are now due for their second dose, or booster. This booster is needed because protection from the vaccine decreases over time.
A small number of teens who received two doses before their 16th birthday may need a third dose on or after their 16th birthday in order to enter 12th grade.
The only teens who will not need a second dose before 12th grade are those who got their first dose on or after their 16th birthday.
It's best to check with your doctor to see whether or not your child needs the vaccine. Students who are not up-to-date will not be allowed to attend school until they are vaccinated.

“Libraries welcome EVERYONE. You don’t need a library card to go to a library,” said Library Director Mary Jean Jakubowski. “Libraries are integral to our communities, and we want to help; therefore, we are expanding hours on Saturday and opening several (air conditioned) libraries on Sunday to help folks get some relief from the heat. Plus there will be plenty to do as some libraries will have crafts for children, ongoing movies and exhibits. Free library cards will be available to those who want to get one with proof of Erie County residency or employment.”
