Happy World Blood Donor Day!! Today is about all the volunteer blood donors throughout the world who give of themselves to save millions of lives. Blood and platelet donations are a critical part of patient care here at Roswell Park and across the world. Donating blood is a way to make a significant impact in someone's life, and there are no substitutes for blood products.

Our gratitude for our donors is difficult to put into adequate words, and it knows no bounds. You have made a difference in the lives of thousands over the years, and continue to do so with each donation. We are honored that you make us a part of your lives so that you may give back to those in need. Today, and every day, thank you!!

WNY is experiencing a blood emergency due to the national blood shortage! Roswell is always impacted by these shortages, but we are lucky to have The Donor Center for the benefit of our patients!

There is no better time to join the ranks of our amazing donors! If you haven’t donated before, or haven’t seen us in a while, give The Donor Center a call at 716-845-8275. There is no replacement for blood products, and that means we need our schedule filled with every eligible volunteer donor possible. With demand for blood products increasing, and shortages ongoing, situations like this are likely to continue. Please consider becoming a regular blood or platelet donor with us! Our patients’ treatment depends on it.

Roswell is currently in need of type O blood and platelets of any type. Please schedule and share!

05/05/2021

Urgent message: WNY is experiencing a severe blood shortage. You may begin to see local news coverage. Roswell Park is experiencing the same blood shortage for type O blood. Please consider donating at Roswell Park. Blood products stay right here at Roswell Park to benefit cancer patients. Thank you!

Today is National Jelly Bean Day, and we will be sharing jelly beans with each donor that comes in! Jelly beans got their start during the American Civil War when Boston confectioner, William Schraff, urged customers to send jelly beans to soldiers fighting in the war. The first advertisement for jelly beans appeared on July 5, 1905 and cost nine cents per pound. We hope you enjoy a taste of these sweet treats today!

Hey donor family! I'd love to get your feedback. What made you keep coming to donate even in a pandemic? Even though Roswell Park and the Donor Center made it safe for you to do so, you must have been a bit nervous about it. In the scariest of times, you kept coming. Why? What made you forego any fears you may have had to help someone else? Love to know. thanks:)

We know that Covid-19 dominates the headlines, but other medical emergencies must be attended to as well-especially at Roswell Park. Everyday patients at Roswell Park need blood products and therapeutic treatments. You know who has been here each and every day since the pandemic began? Our TEAM-that's who! And, by team I mean our top-notch Donor Center collections and administrative team and our amazing Therapeutic Apheresis team.

We are so grateful for these compassionate team members and for an immensely valuable extension of our team; life-saving blood and platelet donors. They show up! Whether it's a snow storm, or even a pandemic they just keep coming back and make such a difference in the lives of our patients.

Today our friends at MassMutual New York State, recognized the importance of what our team does by treating them to a Panera lunch. And, they also thanked our donors with special chocolate treats. In honor of the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday and National Donor Day both on February 14th, MassMutual wanted to extend their heartfelt thanks.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute is fortunate to have a compassionate and talented healthcare and support team. Our patients, employees and the community benefit from all they do. Today was a great opportunity to showcase the significant role blood collections, therapeutic services and blood and platelet donations play on patient care here at Roswell Park. Thank you team and thank you MassMutual. If you know someone who donates blood or platelets, thank them. They are lifesavers! And, while you are at it feel free to give a shout out to our Donor Center and Therapeutic Apheresis teams who are not always in the limelight, but who make a BIG difference here at Roswell Park.

If you would like to become a donor at Roswell Park, we look forward to talking with you and making you part of our family. We might even be able to fit you in tomorrow (Sat, 2/13). Give us a call!

February is Black History Month, and blood banks as well as blood collection facilities would not operate as effectively and save so many lives without the contributions of Dr. Charles Richard Drew.

Dr. Charles Richard Drew (1904-1950) was an American surgeon who is known as the father of blood banks. His development of improved blood storage techniques during early WWII allowed medics to save thousands of lives during the war and paved the way for modern blood banking.

In 1933, Drew earned both a Doctor of Medicine degree and a Master of Surgery degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He earned his doctorate degree from Columbia University in 1940. Drew was the first African American to graduate with a doctorate degree from Columbia University, the first African American examiner for the American Board of Surgery and earned the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal in 1943 for “the highest and noblest achievement” by an African American. He protested racial segregation in the donation of blood and blood storage, and ultimately resigned his post working with the U.S. military due to this policy.

Drew died in 1950 from injuries sustained after a car accident. He was 45. It is remarkable what he was able to accomplish in his limited time here. Today, we thank Dr. Charles Richard Drew for his contributions to science and medicine that allow us to help provide life-saving treatment to our patients!

Give Blood, Give Life

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center patients require more than 17,000 blood product transfusions each year. The need for blood and platelets at Roswell Park is enormous as these vital, life-saving blood components cannot be manufactured, and our patients have a consistent need for them. We need dedicated; caring donors to provide Roswell Park patients with the gift of life. By making a donation at The Donor Center at Roswell Park, you are contributing to the life-saving care of a person who needs you! We are grateful to the many loyal donors who continue to support our program and we are eager to welcome new donors!

The Donor Center at Roswell Park was established in 1964. Founded by Dr. Elias Cohen, we are among the three oldest platelet collection facilities in the country. The Donor Center has a professional and very experienced staff, so donors can expect a high level of expertise, rigorous standards of care, compassion, and dignity with each donation.

I feel blessed donating my 166th platelet donation at the end of my 7th year!
Everyone should try to give platelets or blood at least once. It's a wonderful feeling helping someone, even for one more day.You can direct your donation of platelets, if that person is lucky enough to not need them at that time someone else will get them.If anyone in my area wants a ride I go every two weeks would be glad to have company.Roswell has a great staff. Please just think about it.Thank you.
Consider coming and joining me in giving platelets so others can succeed in their battle with cancer. I go every two weeks and can tell you that the nurses & staff will do everyhting in their power to make it an easy experience for you! They will provide snacks, beverages and televisions if you want them. Today a gentleman introduced himself to me and thanked me for helping save his wife's life Nothing can be more rewarding, so if you can give a little time to save a life please do so. The Donor Center number is 845-8275, and if you have any questions I can answer give me a call or send me a PM.
I would like to take this time to say "Happy Mother's day" to all the women that work at the donor center, that help to give hope to a mother that could have one more day with their kids.
