Today coincides two important celebrations: Flag Day and the 251st Birthday of the United States Army.

On June 14, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the enlistment of riflemen to serve the United Colonies, establishing what would become the United States Army and laying the foundation for generations of dedicated servicemembers.

Two years later, on June 14, 1777, Congress adopted a resolution establishing the design of the nation's flag. Over time, that design evolved into the iconic Stars and Stripes we proudly display today, with 50 stars representing the states and 13 stripes honoring the original colonies.

Thank you to the countless men and women who have served our country, upholding the ideals of our nation and protecting the freedoms represented by the Stars and Stripes.

Thank you to Reid Ferguson, Chef Drew, Chef Eammon, and the entire Que 42 BBQ Grills Mafia team for putting on an incredible Kids Grill Off at the The Heart of Music Festival in East Aurora.

I had the opportunity to serve as a judge, and I was amazed by the talent, creativity, and enthusiasm these young chefs brought to the competition. Events like this give kids the chance to learn new skills, build confidence, and experience what it’s like to compete in a real cooking competition.

Thank you to Chris Welch for the invitation and for everything you do to make the festival a success while giving back to the community through its charitable mission.

Congratulations to all of the participants and winners. Based on what I saw, Buffalo’s next generation of pitmasters is already hard at work.

A special thank you to the East Aurora Police Department and all of the first responders who helped keep MusicFest safe and enjoyable for everyone.

This past Saturday was the Springville Center for the Arts Annual Art Crawl! I was honored to be part of the festivities and to see so many community groups come together to make it a success.

A special thank you to Concord Town Supervisor Phil Drozd and Springville Mayor Russ Belscher for letting me tag along in their truck during the parade.

Congratulations to Springville Center for the Arts on the opening of the new theater space. I’m looking forward to seeing the project completed and attending the first performance this summer.

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy, France. On June 6, 1944, nearly 160,000 brave servicemen faced extraordinary danger, with thousands making the ultimate sacrifice. Their courage and determination helped change the course of World War II and secure the freedoms that continue to be cherished today.

Their service and sacrifice remain a lasting testament to the cost of liberty. As we commemorate D-Day, we honor those who served, those who gave their lives, and the enduring values for which they fought.

It was a pleasure to join Superintendent Heim of the Concord Highway Department for a road tour this morning. The Concord Highway crew continues to do a fantastic job maintaining town roads and infrastructure, but it remains an ongoing challenge to get county-owned roads properly addressed.

Road maintenance involves much more than repaving and filling potholes. Work such as resealing, ditching, drainage improvements, and tree trimming is critical to extending the life of our roads, yet these needs are often overlooked on county-owned stretches.

There is some good news: several county roads in the area are scheduled for work this year, including Genesee, Abbott Hill, Hoffman, and Brown Hill Roads. While this is a positive step forward, many roads remain in desperate need of attention, and I will continue advocating to ensure they receive the improvements they deserve.

Earlier today, Mark Poloncarz asked the Legislature to approve a $2.25 million contract with ErieNet.

This is the same ErieNet project that was originally sold to taxpayers as a way to expand broadband access and bring service to underserved communities. Instead, after years of delays and more than $44 million in taxpayer investment, Erie County is now being asked to become one of ErieNet’s largest customers.

During today’s discussion, I asked why there was no competitive bidding process for this contract. The response was that no other provider would submit a proposal.

Think about that for a second.

For years, ErieNet was justified because there wasn’t enough competition in the broadband market. Now we’re being told ErieNet is essentially the only option.

Taxpayers have been told for years that ErieNet is about to go live, about to deliver, and about to save money. Yet we’re now being asked to spend even more taxpayer dollars and move critical county services onto a network that still has not demonstrated it can meet its promises.

I spent part of my day with students from across Erie County at Power of Us: A Celebration of Youth Civic Engagement.

I joined a panel discussion about getting involved in your community and the different ways people can make a difference through local government.

One of the highlights was watching students discuss Erie County’s youth hunting law. They took positions on both sides, made thoughtful arguments, and - most importantly - listened respectfully to one another.

In a time when respectful disagreement can feel rare, it was encouraging to see so many young people willing to engage in civil discussion, think critically, and defend their ideas.

Thank you to the Academy for Human Rights, Erie 1 BOCES, the teachers, and everyone who made today’s event possible. Erie County has some impressive future leaders coming up behind us.

Question for Erie County taxpayers:

Should politicians have access to the county-owned Bills hospitality suite?

Yesterday, I proposed a simple amendment to the Bills suite policy: ban all elected officials, including me, from entering or using the suite.

I believe this is a common-sense proposal that puts taxpayers first and removes any appearance that elected officials are receiving special access or perks.

If this policy is really about the people, why not support an amendment that would keep politicians out of the suite?

Taxpayers deserve transparency and accountability, not loopholes that allow elected officials access to a county-owned luxury suite.

Youth big game hunting is officially approved in Erie County! Today, the Erie County Legislature voted to override the County Executive’s veto.

This almost never happens, and it speaks volumes about how strong the public support for this program truly was. This was not about politics. It was about common sense, public service, and listening to the people we represent.

I was proud to cosponsor this legislation and help get it across the finish line.

Once filed with New York State, this local law will take effect immediately, meaning 12 and 13 year old youth hunters in Erie County will be able to participate in big game hunting alongside trained, supervising adults just like youth across nearly all of New York State already can.

The New York State DEC’s own data shows this program is safe and working with zero signs of incidents.

Thank you to the hunting groups, youth advocates, families, and community members who showed up, spoke out, attended hearings, and fought for this every step of the way. Your voices made the difference.

If you know a youth hunter, let them know Erie County is finally joining the rest of New York this fall.

Today isn’t just the unofficial start of summer or a long weekend. It is a day to pause, reflect, and remember the men and women who gave their lives serving this country and never made it home.

I am grateful to have walked in the West Seneca Memorial Day Parade this morning and to also stop by the conclusion of the Town of Wales ceremony. It was great to see so many people come together to honor the fallen and speak with the veterans who carry these memories with them every day.

Today and every day, let’s remember those who gave everything for our freedom.
