The second part of our Buffalo Place New York Main Street program streetscape project included the installation of 23 new garbage cans along Main Street and 7 dog waste bag dispensers. These amenities help to keep Downtown clean.

Several of the new garbage cans are located on the block between Seneca and Swan where the large wind calming structure was taking down last summer. Because the structure occupied much of the block, there were few amenities there. Other garbage cans replace the outdated ones that are more than 30 years old and supplement the limited number of cans on those blocks. The new garbage cans match the ones installed on the blocks that have had Cars on Main Street projects completed.

The dog waste bags are helpful for those who take care of their furry friends, which we have seen more of with the rise of Downtown residential living. Funding for the streetscape project is provided by the New York State Homes & Community Renewal.

With the rise in bicycling over the last few years, Buffalo Place is helping support cyclists working in or passing through Downtown. Three Fixit bike repair stations have been installed on Main Street. These stations include tools necessary to perform basic bike repairs and maintenance, such as changing a flat tire or adjusting brakes.

Stations are located at Main and South Division (between the Pulaski Monument and the Ellicott Square Building), Lafayette Square (near Main and Clinton Street, in front of the Brisbane Building), and at 671 Main Street (near Hostel Buffalo Niagara). Bike air pumps were also installed at each of the 3 stations, with an additional stand alone air pump at Fountain Plaza (in front of the Bank of America Building). These pumps will allow cyclists to keep their tires full and ready to ride. Funding for these was provided as part of the streetscape portion of the Buffalo Place New York Main Street grant, provided by New York State Homes & Community Renewal. 🚲

Cars Sharing Lower Main Street construction is getting an early spring start and it is going to affect traffic and parking on Main Street in the Theatre District, Fountain Plaza and 500 Block areas this weekend. Two new catenary poles are being installed near the Thruway overpass. Metro Rail will not be able to run past Seneca Street to Canalside, and will need to run on a single tract to provide service. This will limit parking and driving on Main between Tupper and Mohawk Streets because trains will travel part of the time in the opposite direction as automobile traffic.

No driving or parking will be allowed on Main Street from 11pm Friday night, March 19th to 7am Monday morning, March 22nd in the following areas:
• West side heading southbound: Between Tupper and Huron Street.
• East side heading northbound: Between Mohawk and Chippewa Street.

Metro Rail will run a train shuttle between the Fountain Plaza and Seneca stations on Saturday, March 20th and Sunday, March 21st. The shuttle will run on the east side of Main Street. Regular Metro Rail service will operate between the Fountain Plaza station and UB. The west side/ inbound Fountain Plaza station will be used for both inbound and outbound trips. Trains will not be able to reach the Erie Canal Harbor stations. https://metro.nfta.com/schedules/single-tracking. Of course, the #8 Metro Bus will run regular service – it goes to Canalside with a stop at Marine Drive and Pearl Street.

Normal Metro Rail service will resume on Monday, March 22nd.

New catenary pole installation started last weekend with test pits to identify underground utilities. This Saturday, overhead high-voltage power lines will be powered off and pulled to the side. A drilling rig will be installed in the trackbed to excavate the new catenary pole bases to 24-feet-deep. Concrete foundations will be poured for both poles. Work will be completed on Sunday with restoring Metro Rail power lines.

So why have there been fireworks downtown 2 weeks in a row?? Somebody should let residents and businesses know what’s going on down here. The neighborhood dogs are going crazy and nobody seems to know why fireworks are randomly going off.
