Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site

If you're driving down Delaware Ave in Buffalo, you might notice that the has a dramatic new look. Actually, it's more that we've largely recreated a 125-year-old look.

Last night, our partners at Ace Flag & Gift Shop hung black bunting across the TR Site's portico to commemorate the 125th anniversary of President William McKinley's tragic assassination at Buffalo's Pan-American Exposition. After McKinley's death in the early morning hours of September 14th, Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated here at 641 Delaware Ave (the home of TR's friend, Ansley Wilcox). A well-known photo taken of the Wilcox home on the afternoon of September 14th provided the inspiration for the current installation.

For our detail-oriented friends: note that the flag has been "flipped" (with the blue field of stars at the upper left, not the upper right) to reflect the modern flag code, which did not exist in 1901. Our flag also has 45 stars (versus the today's 50 star flag), because there were 45 states/stars at the time of TR's inauguration.

The commemorative display will be in place through the 125th anniversary of TR's unexpected inauguration (Sept 14th) and also Constitution Day (Sept 17th). ICYMI, our new exhibit -- 12 DAYS IN BUFFALO -- takes a closer at the days leading up to TR's 1901 inauguration. It includes dramatic period photos & rarely-seen artifacts. 12 DAYS will be open through early October & is included with regular admission. It can be paired with a guided tour of the historic home, or viewed as a stand-alone experience.

In honor of , here's a 1907 photo of Frances Wilcox and her dog. (Frances was the daughter of Ansley & Mary Grace Wilcox.) Although the Wilcox family is documented to have had several dogs over the years, the name of this particular pup has been lost to history.

It's at the TR Site! As part of our new exhibit, we were inspired by Made By Us to install a Wish Wall marking America's 250th birthday.
