The progress we have made against COVID.

While we still have work to do, we are on the other side of the mountain. Thankfully, we were smart, and every New Yorker did their part to ease this crisis.

Weeks ago, we were losing up to 800 people per day to COVID. At the time, it seemed that the crisis would never end. 17 people died yesterday. On any day, that is a tragedy. Compared to weeks ago, it is remarkable progress.

Even as we celebrate this triumph, we cannot forget that the fallout from COVID has been immense. Thousands have died. Many more are on unemployment and have struggled to get the benefits they deserve.

Our economy has taken a hit, and New Yorkers in every corner of our state are feeling the economic pain. Small businesses have had to shut their doors, and many will not reopen.

Even in these difficult times, there are signs of hope. How did we make such remarkable progress in the number of COVID deaths and positive cases? We all listened to the warnings, practiced social distancing, wore our masks, and changed our daily lives to combat the spread.

It has not been easy, but New York’s strategy has made a significant difference, and countless lives have been saved. We are turning a corner, but sadly that is not the case in other states. If you look at the numbers, other states are seeing significant spikes in cases. Many states rushed to reopen, without considering the science, and are paying the price.

We have been on the reopening path for over a month. In that time, we have seen the numbers continue to drop. Businesses are reopening their doors and we are starting to get back to a new sense of normal. At the same time, we're not seeing a spike like other states.

We need to continue to be smart as the phased reopening moves along. Follow the guidelines, wear a mask in public, and we will continue to make it through this challenge together.

North Buffalo Strong

Small businesses are the cornerstone of our communities. The Hertel Business Association started their #northbuffalostrong campaign to support their small business owners during the pandemic.

As we begin to reopen and see the light at the end of the tunnel, this is a great example of how we can help our neighbors get back on their feet.

Joined the community this evening for a peaceful demonstration in Niagara Square.

Listening to the voices demanding action. Reform is coming.

What we witnessed outside of Buffalo City Hall last night was appalling. Thankfully the man who was pushed to the ground is doing better.

The officers must be held accountable and suspending them was the right thing to do, but this incident should have never happened. The last two weeks have exposed a system desperately in need of reform. But let's be honest. This didn't just start two weeks ago.

The Assembly will be back in session soon to take action. I look forward to discussions with my Assembly colleagues today about the best path forward to deliver real reforms that will make a difference here in New York.

The video is very hard to watch. Glad to see the man is in stable condition.

There is no excuse for what happened.

Edited for further update on tonight's incident. I've confirmed the 75 year old man injured tonight is in serious but stable condition at ECMC. While it is early, thankfully he is expected to recover.

What we saw sickened us all. Simply put, the officers must be held responsible for their actions, not just fired.
----------------------------------

I've seen videos of the incident in front of Buffalo's City Hall in which an older protester appears to have been shoved by police, fell backwards and suffered a serious head injury. It sickens me. I've confirmed he is at Erie County Medical Center in stable condition. My thoughts are with him now.

Thank you to the peaceful protesters who took to the streets in Buffalo last night to march and speak out against the murder of George Floyd.

While I stand in solidarity with their anger, sadly their activism was followed by a small group of vandals who were hell bent on inciting chaos.

Breaking windows, including many minority-owned small businesses on Grant Street and setting fire to Buffalo City Hall is not an effective way to ensure justice is met.

This type of disruption should not overshadow the important work of activists who are working every day to make Buffalo and WNY a better place for all.

Hopefully lessons have been learned and we can move forward together to affect positive change in our society.

Former MPD Officer Derek Chauvin In Custody, Charged With Murder In George Floyd's Death

This week at kitchen tables across America, the discussion has turned from pandemic to the events unfolding in Minneapolis and throughout our nation.

George Floyd's murder is an unconscionable injustice, and I am grateful to see the first steps being taken to ensure those responsible are held accountable. I can't imagine the pain his family and others are going through.

It's a pain that is sadly all too familiar for Black families in every corner of our country. No one should have to fear that their loved one will be targeted solely because of the color of their skin or who they are. For African Americans, this is a daily reality.

The conversations we are all having are an important part of the recognition of the flaws in our society. We cannot ignore the pain Black communities have endured for centuries. We should all share in the grief that is being experienced and strive to be part of the solution.

On a state and national level, we need to take action to prevent these injustices and protect Americans from being unfairly targeted.

On Friday, John Harrington of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety announced that Chauvin has been taken into custody in connection with the May 25 death.

My mother is in a local assisted-living facility. She, and other residents, were kept in their rooms basically 24/7 for approximately seven weeks with very little social interaction. While they can now leave their rooms, they are still locked inside the building, breathing the same stale, recirculated air for eight weeks. Also eight weeks without any personal contact with family members. Residents that are physically able need to be able to go outside for fresh air. Why not allow them to sit on chairs, spaced six feet apart, on the spacious patio? I understand the need to protect their physical health, but their mental health is being completely ignored. This is elder abuse! I would love an opportunity to talk to you about it.
Happy Earth Day !!! ♻️🌏🌿🌻🌺🥀🌹🌼

Mr. Ryan, they have started to dismantle rides at fantasy island on grand island. More rides have gone up for sale listed on used rides pages online. I do not believe that Apex Parks Group has been honest with you. There are buyers on the table and Nobody seen any kind of response from Apex Parks Group concerning the sale of the park. Is there a way we could expedite the process and mediate a sale? I know Grand Island councilman Mike Madigan has taken calls from respected people interested.
