Guess Who… and Guess What? 🎉

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be training at the Delavan Grider Community Center!

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, making this an especially important time to have open, healthy conversations about mental well-being, mental health, and understanding mental illness.

And caregivers—this conversation is for YOU, too.

We spend so much time making sure everyone else is okay that we can forget to check in with ourselves. Caring for someone you love can be rewarding, exhausting, frustrating, joyful—and sometimes all of those things in the same day.

💚 Join us. Come talk. Come listen. Come learn.

No judgment. No stigma. Just good conversations about mental well-being and the importance of recognizing when you—or someone you love—may need additional support.

Caregivers, invest in YOU. Your well-being matters, too.

🚨 THE HIDDEN WORKFORCE CRISIS

3 in 5 employees are caregivers.

Yet too many organizations still treat caregiving as a personal issue instead of a workforce issue.

But caregiving doesn't stop when an employee clocks in.

The impact shows up at work:

📉 Increased absenteeism
📉 Decreased productivity
💰 Billions lost in productivity
⏰ Employees reducing hours or rearranging their workday
😔 Increased stress, burnout, and distraction

69% of working caregivers report making changes to their work because of caregiving responsibilities.

Your employees aren't choosing between work and home.

They're trying to manage both.

💙 Start Smart Plus (SSP) helps employers support the employees who are supporting everyone else.

Through our Caregiver Employee Assistance Program, SSP provides education, resources, care navigation, and real human support to help employees manage the challenges of caring for an aging loved one.

👉 HR Leaders & Employers: Let's talk.

Don't wait until caregiving shows up as absenteeism, lost productivity, or employee turnover.

Bring Start Smart Plus into your workplace and make caregiver support part of your employee benefits strategy.

💙 WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU REVIEWED YOUR SENIOR’S HEALTHCARE PLAN?

A healthcare plan shouldn't be “set it and forget it.”

As our loved ones age, things change.

🏥 Health conditions change
💊 Medications change
🧠 Memory and cognitive abilities may change
🏠 Living and safety needs change
💰 Financial needs change
👨‍👩‍👧 And the caregiver’s ability to provide care can change too.

The plan that worked last year may not be the right plan today.

At Start Smart Plus (SSP), we encourage families to review their loved one’s healthcare and care plan regularly—before a crisis forces you to make decisions.

💙 YOUR NEXT STEP:

Take 15 minutes this week and ask:

“If something changed tomorrow, do we know what Mom or Dad wants—and do we have a plan?”

If the answer is “I’m not sure,” call Start Smart Plus.

We'll help you look at the whole picture, identify the gaps, and determine your next steps.

👉 Don't wait for the crisis to create the plan. Review it TODAY.

Being a caregiver is TOUGH!

Everyone says, “We all get the same 24 hours.”

But when you're a caregiver, it sure doesn't feel that way.

Appointments. Medications. Work. Family. Phone calls. Decisions. Worry. And somehow, you're supposed to find time for YOU.

At Start Smart Plus, you are not alone.

Sometimes you need resources.
Sometimes you need guidance.
And sometimes… you just need to VENT!

Don't wait until you're overwhelmed or in crisis to ask for help.

💙 YOUR NEXT STEP:

Schedule a Caregiver Conversation with Start Smart Plus.

Tell us:
✔️ What's keeping you up at night
✔️ Where you're feeling overwhelmed
✔️ What your senior needs
✔️ What YOU need
✔️ Or simply… VENT!

Then we'll help you identify your next 1–2 steps so you don't have to solve everything at once.

👉 Call or schedule your Caregiver Conversation TODAY.
www.startsmartplus.com
or type "Help" and we will DM you with more information.

Your first step doesn't have to solve everything.
It just has to move you forward.

You care for them. Let SSP help support you.

💙 Have You Heard About New York’s Blue Envelope Program?

A traffic stop can be overwhelming for someone with autism or other communication or sensory needs.

New York’s Blue Envelope Program provides drivers with a special envelope for their license, registration, and insurance. It alerts law enforcement that the driver may need additional patience or a different approach to communication.

The goal is simple: reduce misunderstandings, lower stress, and keep everyone safer.

But here's something else to consider…

👵🏽 What about our seniors?

The same concerns can apply to an older adult experiencing dementia, memory loss, confusion, hearing difficulties, or other cognitive changes. A senior may appear uncooperative when they are actually confused, frightened, or having difficulty understanding instructions.

Could a similar program help protect our seniors? I believe it’s a conversation worth having.

Safety isn't always about taking away independence. Sometimes it's about putting the right safeguards in place so someone can maintain their independence safely and with dignity.

💙 Join Start Smart Plus.

If you're caring for an aging parent or loved one, you don't have to figure out every next step alone. Join the SSP community for education, resources, guidance, and conversations that help families plan ahead.

WORD OF THE DAY: ANOSOGNOSIA

By the numbers, anosognosia is common in people with serious mental illness and is also frequently seen in people living with dementia.

But here's what caregivers need to understand:

Anosognosia is NOT simply denial.

Denial is a psychological defense mechanism. Somewhere inside, the person may recognize the truth but has difficulty accepting it.

With anosognosia, changes in the brain impair a person's ability to recognize their own illness or limitations.

They aren't necessarily refusing to understand.

Their brain may not be able to process that they are sick.

So, how hard is that for a caregiver to deal with?

As hard as cement.

You can argue.
You can explain.
You can show them the diagnosis.
You can remind them what the doctor said.

But you may never convince them because the ability to recognize the illness itself may be impaired.

Two simple rules for caregivers:

1. Honor the feelings.
You don't have to agree with their version of events. Acknowledge how they feel instead of arguing about whether they're sick.

2. Focus on the goal.
What are you actually trying to accomplish? Taking medication? Going to an appointment? Staying safe? Getting dressed? Eating?

Sometimes getting to the goal is more important than winning the argument.

You don't have to convince someone of their diagnosis to help care for them.
