On August 28, 1935 , Fireman Matthew Merzig of Rescue Squad No. 1 Died in the Line of Duty.

Rescue Squad 1 was dispatched to the Mann Bros. Linseed Oil Company at 352 Ohio St. around 11 o'clock a.m.. Two workers had gone into a 12' deep tank and collapsed. Fireman Merzig donned his filter type mask and descended into the tank. He collapsed as he reached the bottom as well. Captain Leo Sullivan of Rescue Squad 1 donned his filter type mask as well, but had a rope attached to his waste before descending. He too collapsed but was able to be pulled from the tank quickly and revived. He was taken to Emergency Hospital to recover.

Additional units were dispatched to the scene. Crews used grappling hooks, pike poles and ropes to attempt a Rescue of Fireman Merzig and the two workers.

After nearly a half hour, the three men were removed and pronounced deceased at the scene. Fireman Merzigs comrades disregarded the Doctors findings and continued rescusitation efforts using an inhalator to no avail. The men were given last rites by local parish priests.

Fireman Merzig was 30 years of age at the time of his death. His was an 8 Year Veteran of the Buffalo Fire Department. Merzig loved the dangerous work the Rescue Squad did and was always the first to volunteer for any job.

Fireman Merzig was survived by his wife and predeceased by 2 year old Matthew Jr.

The final cause of death, although disagreed upon by different chemist's was listed as asphixiation due to exposure to Sulfuric acid and caustic soda, two ingredients in Linseed Oil.

A Buffalo Evening News reported assigned the story arrived on scene and began to gather details of the incident, only to learn the deceased fireman was his brother in law.

On August 24th, 2009 Lieutenant Charles "Chip" McCarthy of Rescue Co. 1 and Firefighter Jonathan " Simeon" Croom of Ladder Co. 7 Died in the Line of Duty.

At 03:51 hours, Companies were dispatched to 1815 Genesee St. Box 363. Fire was in the basement of a 2 Story Brick storefront with apartments above. Crews were trying to gain access to the main fire area in the basement but we're having difficulty due to the extreme security measures. Initial reports stated that someone could be heard inside the structure. A 2nd Alarm was transmitted due to the heavy fire load and difficulty gaming access.

After exhausting his initial air supply, Lt. Charles McCarthy of Rescue Co. 1 re-entered the structure with a fresh air supply to do one more search and to make sure all members were out of the store due to rapidly deteriorating conditions.

While performing his search, Lt. McCarthy fell thru a collapsing floor into the basement of the structure. Hearing his call for help, Firefighter Jonathan Croom of Ladder Co. 7 , (assigned as part of the F.A.S.T.) quickly entered the structure coming to Lt. McCarthy's aide. He too fell into the basement.

A 3rd Alarm was transmitted as crews worked to save their comrades.

Rapidly spreading fire conditions and the threat for further collapse hindered the rescue attempts. Once the fire was knocked down, crews breached a wall on the number 4 side to gain access to the missing men. The structure was shored up, and water was drafted out of the basement.

Shortly after 9:15 a.m. , both Firefighters were located. Lt. McCarthy and FF Croom's bodies were removed a short time later.

Lieutenant McCarthy was 45 years of age and a 22 year veteran of the Buffalo Fire Department. He is survived by a wife, three children and a grandchild.

Firefighter Croom was 34 years of age and a 10 year veteran of the Buffalo Fire Department. He was survived by a fiancee a young daughter and unborn son.

For their Ultimate Act of Bravery, Lieutenant McCarthy & Firefighter Croom were Posthumously Awarded the Buffalo Fire Department's Highest Honor, The B.F.D. Memorial Award Gold Medal at the 2010 Buffalo Fire Department Beneficiary Association Awards Ceremony.
