Last week: Introduction to Kubuntu πŸ’ͺπŸΎπŸ’»

The School teachers received a crash course on the benefits of Kubuntu: the most powerful open-source operating software, giving anyone access to a world of educational apps completely for free. For this time we started a pilot project on one computer, we’ll see in 6 months how these were used, and expand to all computers if successful!

For reference, when the school was opened the objective was to have 70% of students in first division... their hard work really paid off and we are all so incredibly proud πŸ‘πŸ‘

So naturally, they organised a celebratory party for themselves.. along with their teachers, GEC guests and the Head of school Sister Faustina! We had a feast, a large cake and of course, hours of dancing πŸ‘†πŸ½πŸ‘‰πŸΎ

Throwback to one of the most exciting Kitenga visits, almost exactly 3 years ago: checking in on the new road, picking out colours for Betsy's house, discovering the beautiful fabric chosen by the Sister for the future school uniforms, and meeting the inaugural class and teachers!

At the time it seemed like so much still needed to be achieved – yet everyone on campus, and especially the girls were simply so happy and proud to be a part of the Kitenga School for Girls. A year later, they would be the ones who ranked the school straight to first place in the region. Yes, they could be proud πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸŽ“

And yet we know that the best has yet to come, as we all, the "GEC & Kitenga" community roll up our sleeves every day to grow this huge dream of LEAVING NO GIRLS BEHIND in the region.

πŸ’« Stay tuned! We will be on site again next week and will be posting live updates.

Today is the International Day to end Female Genital Mutilation.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a violation human rights and an extreme abuse to girls and women. In #Tanzania, thousands of girls undergo #FGM every year. But more and more young women are determined to #EndFGM, like in Kitenga.

Pictured here: the inaugural class playing out their very own theatre piece against FGM, created for the school inauguration in 2017! Their courageous voices were heard by a large audience made of school staff, overseas visitors, religious groups, and the local community.

πŸ“Έ In order: the father & elders' decision to cut their daughters, the daughters unknowingly coming back from fetching water, the bloody and harmful cut, the mother playing innocent following the escape of her other 2 daughters, and years later, their return armed with an education and a future.

We stand against FGM #endFGM #girlseducation #genderequity #SDG4 #SDG5

(from Tanzania)

In primary school, Lisa dreamed of becoming an engineer. She took computer science as her optional course in secondary school [...]

"If you know how to code electronics, you can address vital issues and improve your society, she argues.

Earlier, I wasn’t concerned about my community, but when I discover a problem now, I see it as an opportunity to change my community. Technology has changed my life and paved my career way,” she says."

The tech industry has traditionally been a man’s world, but 17-year-old Lisa is changing that β€” and changing her society along the way.

Anne, thank you so much for your inspiring and informative presentation today on GEC's work in Tanzania on behalf of girls, their communities, and the future. I loved that there were 13-year-old American girls there to hear about some of the challenges facing their African sisters.
On Women’s Day, I am super excited to introduce my 13 year old, Maya's new website and blog, She Dreams, to you. Maya would like She Dreams to be a voice for disadvantaged girls, particularly those in need of education. She is encouraging her readers to participate in girls' education. Please swing by her page. Please like and share her page, comment, shop or donate. https://www.facebook.com/shedreams.us/
