Say Yes Buffalo is a landmark collaboration that brings all sectors of the community together to provide holistic, year-round support to Buffalo Public School District students throughout their K-12 years and beyond. These services include: -On-site Say Yes staff person (Site Facilitator) devoted to student support -After school and summer enrichment programming -College coaching -Mentoring programs -Tutoring and academic assistance -Legal assistance for families -Health and wellness supports Services will be rolled out to schools depending on what Say Yes “Cohort” they have been assigned to. Resources to Support Children’s Emotional Well-Being Amid Anti-Black Racism, Racial Violence, and Trauma - Child Trends

As we prepare for the new school year, I cannot ignore the fact that our nation continues to struggle with extreme racial injustice and police brutality. With the most recent shooting of Jacob Blake followed by the loss of the beloved Black Panther actor, Chadwick Boseman, the Black community continues to take blow after blow. This cannot be forgotten or pushed aside as move into the new school year.

Children who witness police brutality suffer long lasting physical and psychological effects. Studies have shown that children exposed to trauma are at a higher risk for depression, anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Just having an incident of police brutality occur near where a child lives (even if they don’t directly witness it) can have negative consequences on their health and school performance. We must continue to call out the injustices and inequities and continue to have the hard conversations with our children, families and friends. These conversations are not a “one and done.”

Checkout this article from Child Trends on how to support children’s emotional well-being amid anti-Black racism, violence and trauma.

In case you need some good news this morning, and we all could use some good news.

The best news is that this is the work that Breaking Barriers does every day, that Say Yes Buffalo does every day. We will not stop doing everything in our power to give the next generations of Buffalo kids hope, community, and support.

An important update from a vital community health provider in our city.

An important update from a vital community health provider in our city.

A quick message from our founder and chief medical officer, Dr. Myron Glick:

"A lot of people ask me about how COVID-19 is affecting the community that Jericho Road serves. Since Jericho Road serves a diverse East Side and West Side community in Buffalo, our data and our experience with COVID may be helpful to those who also live in these communities and are considering whether it is safe to send their children back to school or to attend weekly faith services.

We started testing for COVID at Jericho Road in April and, since that time, have tested almost 9,000 people. We have diagnosed nearly 950 people with COVID. Fifty of our patients have been hospitalized and seven have died.

While we have tested nearly equal amounts of white folks, Black folks, and refugees, our data shows clearly that COVID disproportionately affects Black folks and refugees. In fact, if a white person is tested at Jericho Road for COVID, they have a 3% chance of being positive, compared to a Black person who has a 13% chance, or a Burmese refugee who has a 24% chance of being positive. Of the almost 950 people who have tested positive so far at Jericho Road, more than 50% of them are Burmese, Karen, or Nepali refugees. In addition, all seven of our patients who have died from COVID have been Black or Latino.

Our finding that COVID disproportionately affects people of color is not surprising and reflects the underlying systemic racial inequity that exists in America today.

Our data also shows that COVID is still present in our community. Even in the last week, 4% of the people we tested were positive. This data suggests that the Buffalo Public Schools decision to start the year by only offering remote learning to its students is the safest choice at this time. However, this decision will still harm many of the students that we serve who do not have internet access in their home, a working computer, or a parent that is able to speak English, stay home, and help them do the remote school work that will be required. I fear that remote learning will be a major educational set back for many of the children who come to Jericho Road for medical care."

"We think it's a game-changer for the region," Executive Director of Say Yes Buffalo David Rust said. "In terms of job access, and ultimately personal economic mobility and economic development for our region by tapping into the potential of young people in the city of Buffalo. Buffalo is a great city I think everybody has the same potential but not the same opportunity for access to a higher education degree, and ultimately workforce. And that's one of the huge challenges we're trying to tackle."

We 👀you Tierra! We have so many amazing young people interested in medicine and public health right now, who are hungry for internship opportunities. Check us out at sayyestoyourcareer.org👊

Meet our Say Yes Buffalo intern, Tierra Purdue!

Where are you from?
Born and raised in Buffalo, NY.

Where did you go to school?
I'm a Buffalo State College graduate with a degree in applied mathematics with a concentration in statistical modeling and a minor in business economics.

Why were you interested in an internship at Jericho Road?
I wanted to join Jericho Road because I saw how involved in the community they are and that is something that I learned I have a passion for. I also wanted to see all the different sides of a health center. This is a great opportunity to see the different jobs everyone does since I am a recent graduate still trying to find my way.

What is your internship focused on?
My internship is focused on community engagement, project management, and program development.

What is a fun fact about you?
I went to Rwanda with the Anne Frank Project at Buffalo State.

Say Yes Buffalo Response to Covid-19: Help us support our scholars by Say Yes Buffalo

With your help, Buffalo can produce young people with the skills and talents they will need to be successful in whatever comes next. For many of our recent high school graduates, that starts with the technology they need for the demands of a virtual or hybrid semester in the fall. The needs of our scholars are significant, 50% of our Say Yes scholars have a family income below $25,000, and 70% are below $50,000. Help us bridge that gap today.
