On March 28th, we attended the No Kings rally as part of the socialist and anti-imperialist contingent organized by us, Red Youth Rising, SUNY-BDS, and UB-YDSA

While the No Kings movement expresses the people’s demand against the Trumpite regime, it in itself is not revolutionary. It is decentralized in character, lacks a clear political platform, and advocates for vague liberal-democratic reforms that do not sufficiently or effectively address the root of the problem. Trump is not a king; Trump and his regime are a predictable result of the capitalist-imperialist system in crisis. Endless imperialist wars, poverty, a broken healthcare system, lack of social safety nets, and attacks on the LGBTQIA community, women, and immigrants are all problems that cannot be addressed without abolishing capitalism and working toward socialist construction.

However, we must still go where the people are, and demonstrate our solidarity with the working and oppressed masses through action. Our task there is not to soften our aims or merely participate, but to act as theoreticians, propagandists, agitators, and organizers.

Last week we stood in solidarity with tenants of the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority in their struggle for better living conditions in public housing by joining a rally followed by a disruption of a BMHA public hearing.

Tenants spoke about the subpar conditions they continue to face, including rats, roaches, and lack of heating, while officials of the capitalist state continued to dismiss and downplay these demands.

The American Party of Labor demands the right of all people to have quality, affordable and accessible housing with proper temperature control, utilities, accommodations and livable conditions.

Under capitalism, the needs and demands of working people will always be ignored, but today the tenants of BMHA showed that the working class can organize and fight back against the capitalist pigs that deny us basic quality of life while exploiting our labor.

"The most convincing argument to refute all the inventions of the bourgeois and reformist ideologists is life itself, the development of the working class struggle, the waves of which are rising ever higher in all the capitalist countries. The workers taking part in strikes and demonstrations are counted by millions. In some countries, in France and Italy, these strikes have assumed colossal proportions shaking the foundations of the bourgeois order.

The class struggle is encompassing, besides the working class, also other broad sections of the population: peasants, rank and file office workers, progressive intellectuals, women and especially school youth. The circle of their demands is broadening and the struggle for economic, social and cultural interests is being ever more integrated with the political struggle. This integration has today also a stronger objective basis. The growth of the monopoly-state capitalism and of the role of the capitalist state generally in the whole national life, which is noticed everywhere, creates such a situation that every struggle, from the very logic of things, assumes a political character, for the wor king people clash with the capitalist state which stands guard over the interests of the bourgeoisie.

All this shows that the working class is a class with great and inexhaustible revolutionary potential, that the class struggle is not a 'nostalgia of the revolutionaries that have become outmoded,' as the propagandists of neo-capitalism say, but a realistic, objective and inevitable fact showing that the working class interests are irreconcilable with those of the bourgeoisie and that the sole road to its liberation from capitalist oppression and exploitation is the carrying through to the end of this historic struggle."

Yesterday, ICE agents on a mission to terrorize & deport immigrants in Minneapolis, murdered innocent bystander Renee Nicole Good, 37, in broad daylight & in cold blood. Although Trump, Secretary Kristi Noem, and the Department of “Homeland Security” claim that Good was a domestic terrorist & the shooting was in self-defense, video evidence shows otherwise. Good was murdered in the streets for the crime of protesting against the fascist Trump regime & its armed terrorists.

The American Party of Labor condemns these murders & all other ICE & CBP operations in the strongest possible terms. To be clear, the APL considers all resistance against ICE & other armed agents of this white supremacist regime to be legitimate & justified. ICE must be abolished, & all its agents & officials prosecuted for their crimes.

[In light of popular protests, Gov.] Walz went on to threaten protesters in the succeeding days with arrest if they aren’t passive & agreeable enough...

It is becoming increasingly clear that all progressive Americans must rally together, organize into truly revolutionary organizations and fight back against state terror using all appropriate means available. The people’s resistance has so far been ineffective because of disorientation & disorganization. While the people can & do rise up against state terror, they lack the leadership, organization & ideological basis necessary to form a truly effective front against the ever-rising tide of fascism. That must change.

Together, we can build a better world & a better society, where innocent people are no longer murdered in the street by white supremacist thugs & their names dragged through the mud by fascist politicians.

To build this world, we must come together & struggle as one unified, proletarian movement. We must resolutely combat spontaneity & fight together in a planned, principled manner designed to organize the broadest mass of laboring people, into a disciplined front which is capable of offering real, tangible resistance against the state’s terror. We must demonstrate to the people that the path of passive resistance is not adequate, and show them that a better way is possible.

Photos from the demonstration in front of the Immigration Court today. (The last photo is a photo of the Vigil for Renee Good, held by - which we invited all attendees of our protest to accompany us to after we wrapped up - because it was highly related, and nearby)

We decided to call for this event in order to protest the death of Renee Good at the hands of ICE officers in Cincinnati as well as the injuries sustained by Luis David Nico Moncada and Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras who were both both shot by Border Patrol agents in Portland. In order to prevent these tragedies from occurring in the future we need to build strong, working-class parties and institutions. Only we can defend ourselves, but if it's going to work we'll need to do so together.

These events are not stochastic, they are not an aberration of individual behavior. They are part and parcel in the open war being waged against the working people, and against the poor masses abroad, and against the oppressed and colonized people in our country and abroad. We thank everybody who came out. We thank our comrades from YDSA, PSL, BRRN, and SUNY-BDS UB - both for coming out, and in many cases speaking, and also for helping with the preparation work. Every action like this is a tentative step in liberation, but after having taken that step the primary focus must become fastened in the future. We must reject the infantile disorders of spontaneity worship and opportunistic gains. We must organize around our shared class interests, as the only thing that binds the entirety of oppressed people together.

Black folks and people of color are under attack in Trump’s America. Through a number of anti-DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Executive Orders (14173, 14151, 14148) and statements along with a concentrated battle against alleged “anti-American ideologies,” Trump’s administration is hammering hard at federal programs and policies meant to protect the most historically vulnerable peoples in the country. With an administration moving so head-spinningly fast that we at the Red Phoenix are not entirely sure if Black History Month is still federally recognized, we thought it essential to remind our comrades that the historical and ongoing struggle for Black liberation and racial equality are near and dear to the cause of socialism and communism, and that it is every revolutionary’s duty to recognize and uplift the voices and legacies of Black radicals throughout time.

Next year will mark 60 years since the founding of the Black Panther Party and 57 years since the founding of the Young Lords Party. With the threat of fascism lurking over our shoulders, we must remind ourselves that socialism, communism, and so-called radicalism are central to the Black experience, particularly in the United States. In every theater against injustice throughout history, Black folks were there and Black radicals were leading the charge for a better world, a more equal and just world.

Oliver Law was the first Black man to ever lead a racially integrated military force in the history of the United States, and he did so as a communist alongside his brothers and sisters of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the fight against fascism. Walter Cobbs was a Lincoln Brigadier. Thomas Page as well. Whether it’s in the streets of Oakland, the valleys of Jarama, or the beaches of Normandy, we have fought on the front lines as part of our radical heritage.

We must continue to carry and pass the torch of revolution, liberation, and equality that was first lit by our enslaved ancestors and passed along through the Civil Rights Movement and the larger International Communist Movement to the present day. And, as we take this month and every month of our lives to recall the experiences of those who came before us, we have to come to see that almost all of our most dear forebears in the struggle were socialists, communists, or at least sympathetic to the goals of the socialist ideologies.

When asked during an interview in 1964 which economic and political system he preferred, Malcolm X answered, “all of the countries that are emerging today from under the shackles of colonialism are turning towards socialism.” W.E.B. DuBois said upon Stalin’s death, “Joseph Stalin was a great man; few other men of the 20th century approach his stature… As one of the despised minorities of man, he first set Russia on the road to conquer race prejudice and make one nation out of its 140 groups without destroying their individuality.” Paul Robeson sang the praises of the Soviet system and Comrade Stalin on several occasions. Our visions for a planet free of racial prejudice, segregation, xenophobia, anti-Blackness, and white supremacy align entirely with those of communism – with our victory we will see a world where Black people are seen, always first and foremost, as human beings.

A last note on the Soviet system under Stalin, here is the USSR’s policy on racism per the Constitution:

"ARTICLE 123. Equality of rights of citizens of the U.S.S.R., irrespective of their nationality or race, in all spheres of economic, state, cultural, social and political life, is an indefeasible law. Any direct or indirect restriction of the rights of, or, conversely, any establishment of direct or indirect privileges for, citizens on account of their race or nationality, as well as any advocacy of racial or national exclusiveness or hatred and contempt, is punishable by law."

Meanwhile the United States didn’t even fully abolish slavery, as the 13th Amendment states, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” Our country’s private prison industry is thus an industry of slave labor. The struggle continues.

Despite the attempts of the capitalist ruling class to whitewash our history, we cannot fail to realize that our goals for self-determination for Black Americans and African-descendant peoples around the globe have always been intrinsically tied with the final success of communism internationally. Under the capitalist system of exploitation, racism, and class divisions, we can never hope to truly see any form of racial or ethnic equality between different peoples because it is to the benefit of the capitalists and imperialists to divide us through artificial differences of color or nation or ethnic background. Regardless of our ancestry, we are all exploited by capital as members of the working class and each individually represent the international proletariat, destined to transform the world into one where no person has to wonder when their next meal will be, where they will sleep for the night, whether or not they can afford medical care, or whether they will be a victim of a hate crime or systemic racialized violence.

The wisdom of Comrade Fred Hampton rings truer than ever in these treacherous times:

"We’ve got to face the fact that some people say you fight fire best with fire, but we say you put fire out best with water. We say you don’t fight racism with racism—we’re gonna fight racism with solidarity. We say you don’t fight capitalism with no Black capitalism; you fight capitalism with socialism." (“Power Anywhere Where There’s People,” 1969.)

The Black radical tradition calls for us to look inwards at our history of freedom fighting and anti-imperialism. Let us look to our Amilcar Cabrals, our Claudia Joneses, and our Fred Hamptons, and decide whether or not we want to forsake our children to the horrors of the past or pay homage to the legacies of our fallen comrades and ancestors to bring forward a new day of equality, prosperity, and socialism. Happy Black History Month, comrades! Every month in America is Black History Month because Black Americans helped create this nation and every day are working to bring it closer to a land of true liberty and democracy.
