The federal housing agency wants to shift money away from permanent housing and toward programs that impose sobriety and other conditions. Advocates warn that would push many back into homelessness.

Hello LGBTQ+ Task Force Members,
We are reaching out to update individuals on the current activity of the task force and inquiring about individuals interest and time commitments for the sub-committees we have created.

First, the updates: we have met with a local not-for profit to see if they would like to be the lead agency for the Drop-in center.
The Coalition would be responsible for raising the funds, complete all of the data collection, and reporting to any and all financial backers. The agency would be responsible for hiring staff, training, payroll, and day-to-day activities of the Drop-in Center.

We have identified a space at 4 Cathedral Park and are in discussions with St Paul's Episcopal Church to firm up a lease that is responsive to all parties. Both groups have expressed a willingness to make this happen.

With all of this moving forward, the Coalition has granted the Task Force permission to begin raising funds. Any individuals who are interested in supporting the Drop-in Center, financially, can do so by sending checks to the WNY Coalition for the Homeless, with LGBTQ+ written on the memo line. Checks can be sent to:

Western New York Coalition for the Homeless
P.O. Box 618
Buffalo, New York 14205

In an effort to delegate roles and responsibilities we have created committees that individuals can sign up for.
Below is the list of the current working groups. Please let us know if you are interested in joining one or more of the committees.

Development Committee (Staffing)
Program and Services Committee (TIC, Policy)
Stakeholder Mapping Committee
Financial Fundraising Committee
Volunteer Committee
Marketing (Content Creator, Social Media)

Reach out to me, if you would like more information about the committees. You can do this by sending an email to [email protected]

Hello folks, just a little update. We are continuing to move forward with our plans to open an adult LGBTQ+ Drop-in Center in Buffalo. We are partnering with St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Pearl St. And plan to rent space from them. Additionally we are meeting with an agency to discuss the possibility of them being a lead agency with the WNY Coalition for the Homeless. We will begin fundraising in the near future.

While the world has seemingly shut down, and we are slowly reopen services and business, it's important to remember that homelessness and housing concerns are still prevalent. If you are currently facing the threat of an eviction, remember that only the courts can legally evict you. Anything less than a court order is not legal. Nor is it legal for landlords to shut off utilities like gas, electric or water.
