This week we're wishing congratulations and good luck to all the graduating Bengals, but especially our own peer tutor, Peter LaPorta, who is graduating this semester with his MA in English! Working at the Writing Center, says Peter, taught him "the importance of our abilities as humans to help each other and care for one another through writing and person to person contact. It helped me blossom as a person and a writer...The Writing Center is one of the most important outlets a student can utilize at Buffalo State College, and I will never forget my time there." Please join us in wishing Peter all the best in his future endeavors!
Hey Bengals! The Online Writing Center has been BUSY today; in fact, we're even busier than we were at this very time last spring! We're super happy to be busy, though, because that means in spite of this tough semester, you're all working hard and smart by taking advantage of resources that can help you succeed! Haven't made your appointment yet for that final paper? There's still time. We're open regular hours during CEP week. Log into Bengal Success Portal and make your appointment now!
Wondering about how our online tutoring works? Not sure how to make an appointment? We made a short video to walk you through the steps!
This short video takes you through the steps to make an online appointment at the Buffalo State Writing Center.
Today's writing tip comes from our peer tutor Madison, hard at work tutoring online from her dorm! She says, "when writing a paper about a topic I am not too familiar with, I find it very useful to use productive procrastination. I watch videos and crash courses based on the topic and learn a lot more information." After doing this, she notes that she "would also find the same information in journal articles" making them much easier to understand! Madison, and all of our tutors, can help you with your final research papers, or any other writing assignment you might have. Make your appointment in Bengal Success Portal today!
With all those final papers just around the corner, we thought we'd offer up more writing tips from our tutors this week! First up is a familiar face: our long-time professional tutor (and Caring Bengal Award Recipient) Barrett, pictured here, tutoring from his home office!
Barrett encourages students to try out the Writing Center's online tutoring tools, whether it be chat or video or audio, noting that it's important "to explore all the different tools in our bag because we are, after all, highly adaptive creatures; but at the same time, remember to exercise the profoundly simple strategies that’ve gotten us through most of the difficult times in life—stepping back, having perspective, and helping each other out:)" And we're here to help YOU out with your end-of-semester papers and projects. Log into Bengal Success Portal now to book an appointment with Barrett or one of our other awesome tutors!
Great Friday afternoon check-in with the Writing Center team! We shared tutoring strategies, technology tips, and a bit of general silliness. Check out Bengal Success Portal to book your appointment for next week!
For any students out there who may be worried or hesitant about trying out online tutoring, check out these comments from students who visited the online Writing Center last week! Remember, you can book your appointment anytime, using the Bengal Success Portal!

Today's writing tip comes from our professional tutor/ESL specialist Cheryl (and her super handsome work-from-home companion, pictured here!). Her best advice is "not to be afraid of just putting words on paper, no matter how you might think they sound. A lot of anxiety with regard to writing is that we think we need to be perfect from the first sentence. Remember it's a process, and some of the world's best writers have spent years refining pieces! It also helps to get started by simply talking to someone. The Writing Center can certainly help with that--even if we're online and there isn't a word on the page, getting a chat conversation going can help inspire ideas and get you on your way." Book your appointment to chat with a tutor now using Bengal Success Portal!
This week our tutors are sharing their favorite writing tips to help students as we adjust to remote instruction! Up today is Anthony, a grad student in English in his third year as a peer tutor. He recommends, “Take notes! Sketch out an outline and assign certain information to the proper spots in your paper, then use that as you start writing. Also, read (especially now!!!) and keep in mind the mechanics and grammar that your favorite writers implement.”
Remember that the Writing Center is still open...online! Book your appointment any time, using the Bengal Success Portal.
For some extra inspiration as we all get used to remote classes, our tutors will be sharing their favorite pieces of writing advice all this week. Check back tomorrow for more!
First up is John, our grad assistant, still helping to manage the center from home: “For me, writing always begins as a struggle against the blank page. The white space taunts me, coerces me into overthinking and striving for perfection. The most liberating thing I've learned about writing is that every word, thought, or idea does not have to be perfect. It is much easier for me to shoot first and ask questions later. Once you have something down—anything at all— you gain traction and momentum. It doesn't have to be perfect the first time around; that's what editing is for, just write. Having even a few words or sentences that you can go back to and mold like clay goes a long way in the battle against the blank page.” [His cat agrees.]
✍️What’s YOUR best writing tip?

This Valentine's Day, we invite you to celebrate the season (and the written word!) with us at the Writing Center. Stop by our letter-writing station on Friday, February 14th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. We'll have plenty of cards, paper, and art supplies so you can make old school, DIY Valentines for your friends, family, and significant others!
Now that spring semester is underway, we're continuing our "Tutor Profile" series! First up is Gaelle, who has just started her second semester as a peer tutor!
Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello everyone! I am a proud native New Yorker who was born in Brooklyn, New York to be exact! I descend from a Haitian mother and a Colombian father who both taught me the real meaning of hard work and dedication. I am a Leo, so I have the fiery passion that comes along with my horoscope but the compassion of a saint. My major is psychology, and I hope that one day I will open up my own mental health facility.
What do you like about being a peer tutor at the Writing Center?
What I LOVE about being a peer tutor at the Writing Center is the feeling I get when I know I was able to help a student with a paper that was causing them stress. I remember those frustrating papers that would keep me up multiple nights in a row, so any time I can help ease that stress I’m there!
What is your best tip or piece of writing advice?
My best tip or piece of writing advice is to brainstorm. This step is vital! It helps so much with organization and will relieve some of the stress when you start writing.
The Writing Center is officially open for spring semester! Congratulations to junior Paw Wah for winning our "first-visitor-of-the-semester" door prize of a journal and planner. Follow her lead and come to the center to get a head start on your papers and projects!
