This week we're wishing congratulations and good luck to all the graduating Bengals, but especially our own peer tutor, Peter LaPorta, who is graduating this semester with his MA in English! Working at the Writing Center, says Peter, taught him "the importance of our abilities as humans to help each other and care for one another through writing and person to person contact. It helped me blossom as a person and a writer...The Writing Center is one of the most important outlets a student can utilize at Buffalo State College, and I will never forget my time there." Please join us in wishing Peter all the best in his future endeavors!

Today's writing tip comes from our peer tutor Madison, hard at work tutoring online from her dorm! She says, "when writing a paper about a topic I am not too familiar with, I find it very useful to use productive procrastination. I watch videos and crash courses based on the topic and learn a lot more information." After doing this, she notes that she "would also find the same information in journal articles" making them much easier to understand! Madison, and all of our tutors, can help you with your final research papers, or any other writing assignment you might have. Make your appointment in Bengal Success Portal today!

With all those final papers just around the corner, we thought we'd offer up more writing tips from our tutors this week! First up is a familiar face: our long-time professional tutor (and Caring Bengal Award Recipient) Barrett, pictured here, tutoring from his home office!

Barrett encourages students to try out the Writing Center's online tutoring tools, whether it be chat or video or audio, noting that it's important "to explore all the different tools in our bag because we are, after all, highly adaptive creatures; but at the same time, remember to exercise the profoundly simple strategies that’ve gotten us through most of the difficult times in life—stepping back, having perspective, and helping each other out:)" And we're here to help YOU out with your end-of-semester papers and projects. Log into Bengal Success Portal now to book an appointment with Barrett or one of our other awesome tutors!

Today's writing tip comes from our professional tutor/ESL specialist Cheryl (and her super handsome work-from-home companion, pictured here!). Her best advice is "not to be afraid of just putting words on paper, no matter how you might think they sound. A lot of anxiety with regard to writing is that we think we need to be perfect from the first sentence. Remember it's a process, and some of the world's best writers have spent years refining pieces! It also helps to get started by simply talking to someone. The Writing Center can certainly help with that--even if we're online and there isn't a word on the page, getting a chat conversation going can help inspire ideas and get you on your way." This week our tutors are sharing their favorite writing tips to help students as we adjust to remote instruction! Up today is Anthony, a grad student in English in his third year as a peer tutor. He recommends, “Take notes! Sketch out an outline and assign certain information to the proper spots in your paper, then use that as you start writing. Also, read (especially now!!!) and keep in mind the mechanics and grammar that your favorite writers implement.”

Remember that the Writing Center is still open...online! Book your appointment any time, using the Bengal Success Portal.

For some extra inspiration as we all get used to remote classes, our tutors will be sharing their favorite pieces of writing advice all this week. Check back tomorrow for more!

First up is John, our grad assistant, still helping to manage the center from home: “For me, writing always begins as a struggle against the blank page. The white space taunts me, coerces me into overthinking and striving for perfection. The most liberating thing I've learned about writing is that every word, thought, or idea does not have to be perfect. It is much easier for me to shoot first and ask questions later. Once you have something down—anything at all— you gain traction and momentum. It doesn't have to be perfect the first time around; that's what editing is for, just write. Having even a few words or sentences that you can go back to and mold like clay goes a long way in the battle against the blank page.” [His cat agrees.]

Now that spring semester is underway, we're continuing our "Tutor Profile" series! First up is Gaelle, who has just started her second semester as a peer tutor!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello everyone! I am a proud native New Yorker who was born in Brooklyn, New York to be exact! I descend from a Haitian mother and a Colombian father who both taught me the real meaning of hard work and dedication. I am a Leo, so I have the fiery passion that comes along with my horoscope but the compassion of a saint. My major is psychology, and I hope that one day I will open up my own mental health facility.

What do you like about being a peer tutor at the Writing Center?
What I LOVE about being a peer tutor at the Writing Center is the feeling I get when I know I was able to help a student with a paper that was causing them stress. I remember those frustrating papers that would keep me up multiple nights in a row, so any time I can help ease that stress I’m there!

What is your best tip or piece of writing advice?
My best tip or piece of writing advice is to brainstorm. This step is vital! It helps so much with organization and will relieve some of the stress when you start writing.

Time for another "tutor of the week" profile! ✍️📖 Meet new peer tutor, Ariel (pictured on the right with her namesake!). Read on to learn more.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Ariel Neitch, and I am a senior writing major at Buffalo State College. I have an associate degree from Erie Community College, and I have worked at the Aurora Town Public Library since I was a sophomore in high school. I love reading and writing and am currently trying to figure out how to incorporate those passions into a profitable career.

What do you like about being a peer tutor at the Writing Center?
I love the ability to help students make their way towards their highest potential! Assisting my peers in their coursework is so rewarding for me, and I often learn a thing or two myself as I go over writing assignments with people.

What is your best tip or piece of writing advice?
Always read your paper out loud when you’ve “finished” it! Sometimes when you’re reading a piece of writing in your head, you read the paper the way you want it to sound, and you can “autocorrect” these mistakes in your head. Often, if you read your paper out loud you will stumble over those issues and be able to identify some of your errors.

It’s time to introduce another one of our new tutors! ✏️ This week’s interview is with Madison! Read on to learn more:

Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Madison Mack, and I am a junior at Buffalo State College. My major is International Relations, and my minor is Painting. I am in the Rowing Club and Student Political Society, I have three beautiful turtles, and I love to longboard and read (not at the same time) when I'm free.

What do you like about being a peer tutor at the Writing Center?
I love it when I get to teach students new tricks, whether if it's with their writing or using shortcuts on the keyboard or showing them how to create a hanging indent for citations. I find it so comforting to send students off with something they'll always find useful and continue to use.

What is your best tip or piece of writing advice?
If you get stuck while writing, don't stress yourself out. Just walk away from it for a little bit, read an article or two, do five minutes of meditation, or even go for a short walk to clear your mind, and then come back to it. But always make sure you give yourself time (this advice probably will not suit you best if it is an assignment due in less than an hour or so). Also, please, pretty please, reread your work before you submit or print anything out. It helps even more if you read it out loud. Also, come to the Writing Center—there’s no writing assignment too small!

Have you noticed all the new faces in the Writing Center lately? We have 6 new peer tutors who joined us this semester, after successfully completing our tutor training class (ENG 307W) with Dr. Herb. We’ve decided to feature an interview with one new tutor each week so that everyone can get to know them better. Up first…meet Lissette!

Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Lissette DeJesús and I’m a sophomore here at Buffalo State! This is my first semester as a Writing Tutor in the Writing Center, and I’m so excited! Aside from that, I am a theater major and a local actress. Currently I am performing in West Side Story as Consuelo at MusicalFare Theater. Literature/writing and performance seems to really be the route I want to take with my professional life.

What do you like about being a peer tutor at the Writing Center?
Something I’ve been noticing lately is that being a writing tutor gives me so much energy and enthusiasm for the rest of my day. For me, my writing is very sacred and to ask for help can feel even more vulnerable. So when students come in to ask for help with their writing, I’m super amped about it! The one-on-one communication, the journey of the 30 minutes, and a student’s satisfaction is so important to me. It makes me feel like I made a significant contribution for someone. I even learn new information from the assignments students bring in!

What is your best tip or piece of writing advice?
My best writing tip is to not be afraid of collaborating with your tutor. Ask questions! We love to help guide students, but we also don’t want their papers to sound like us. We value students’ words and their stories/opinions. Therefore, we want to help facilitate making their words more clear and concise, while keeping their style and tone intact. Come to us with opinions and ideas and questions. We are here to help!
