UB Global Health Scholars Track

UB Global Health Scholars Track The University at Buffalo Global Health Scholars Track provides Family Medicine residents with first-hand clinical healthcare experiences in developing nations and with the refugee community in Buffalo, New York.

Family Medicine residents gain valuable exposure to procedures, tropical medicine and infectious diseases that they likely would not encounter during rotations in the United States. Purpose: 1. Improve core skills of primary care, such as history and physical exam skills, by working in settings without high technology and specialist networks. 2. Improve cultural competency knowledge, attitudes, and skills. 3. Train residents to care for underserved populations, locally and globally.

Floating Doctors

A week from today (May 7th) something really exciting is going to happen!

It will be even more exciting than coconuts at work! Check back next Wednesday morning for more info.

In this photo two University at Buffalo medical students grab a quick drink during clinic at Kusapin. One of the biggest perks about working with us is the coconuts during clinic!

Definitely not our typical commute home from work! Thanks to Floating Doctors for the wonderful experience in Panama for the UB GHST and several UB medical students.

Kusapin clinic done, 250+ patients seen! Can't believe a hollowed out tree holds so many people or gear.

The trip home proved just as exciting as the clinic. It took over 4 hours to cross rough seas in the locally made cayuco.

Great photo Sam Shimizu-Jones!

UB GHST recently had 2 groups join Floating Doctors, a great organization that provides medical care to remote areas and islands in Panama! The groups contained a Global Health Scholar Track resident, attending physicians, and several UB medical students. Here are some of our 1st year medical students, along with nurses, other volunteers, and several children after a busy clinic day in the village of Kusapin, Panama!

From the Floating Doctors Team to all of our donors and supporters THANK YOU! Volunteer Nurse Lauren McNeil asked what she could donate to make volunteers' lives easier and the operation more effective. A few weeks later a brand new set of Pelican Cases arrived to organize and secure our pharmacy!

"I consider myself lucky to have this experience during residency; it helps me to develop myself in a different way; there is a grounding that comes while in a new culture; you start off with a sense of service but you end up receiving more." -recent UB Family Medicine resident while rotating in Chiapas, Mexico
