The gatehouse to the cemetery in Gettysburg, around which so much of the brutal fighting occurred in July of 1863. To the left is an image taken shortly after the battle, and to the right the same structure as she appeared when my wife and I visited last year. You can see sketched in pencil on the image to the left where someone drew the statue on top. I’d be very interested to know more about that.

Another few of the opposing commanders at the battle, or really series of battles on and through the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On the left, General Lee orders the disastrous charge into the fields in front of him, led by Pickett. To the right, General George Meade and his fixed position of cannons and infantry waits for them.

On the top of the small rise, south east of General Robert E Lee’s position stood General George Meade, right about where this statue now stands. He’s looking across the field at charging Confederate troops as his soldiers and artillery pour fire into them. It’s difficult to imagine what those eyes saw as he watched from this vantage point.
