Job Title: Fire Extinguisher Shop Student Assistant
Department: University at Buffalo Environment, Health & Safety Services (Fire and Life Safety Division)

Job Description:
Student Assistant responsible for assisting the Fire Extinguisher Safety Technician with inspections and maintenance of fire and life safety equipment, vital to the University at Buffalo Community. In addition, assists where needed to support fire and life safety operations including campus events, training, and Hazardous Materials Response Team drills.

SUNY Student
Valid Driver’s License

Physical Requirements: The position requires the ability to lift and carry moderate to heavy equipment.

Hours: 15-29 hours a week between 8am and 5pm during the summer. 12-20 hours a week during the school semester. Schedules are flexible.

Start Date: June 1st 2016
End Date: May 31st 2017 (with reappointment opportunity based on performance)

Sprinklers chase students after fire at UAlbany dorm

A University at Albany dorm fire on Tuesday was started by a candle and stopped by an automatic sprinkler system.


Though the flames were contained to a single room it activated the sprinkler system in Oneida Hall, leaving the main campus building unlivable, campus officials wrote in an email to students. UAlbany says one student suffered minor injuries that required treatment at Albany Medical Center Hospital.


76% of all fatal campus fires involve alcohol. Students
under the influence may respond more slowly to sounds
of smoke alarms or not respond at all.


Campus Firewatch has dedicated January to electrical safety. U.S. fire departments respond each year to an estimated 25,900 home electrical fires. These fires cause an estimated 280 deaths, 1,125 injuries and $1.1 billion in property loss. Here are some tips from the U.S. Fire Administration.

Come to the Getzville Fire Company Open House & Community Day, this Saturday Oct 3rd from 1-4 pm. You can participate in free fire extinguisher training courtesy of UB Fire and Life Safety. You can also donate blood, watch a live car fire demo, even go for a ride in a real fire engine. And don't forget about the doughnuts & cider.
