Firefighter Cancer Support Network, California

Firefighter Cancer Support Network, California We support firefighters, EMS providers and their families when diagnosed with occupational cancer We do not provide legal or medical advice.

We provide critical assistance for career or volunteer, active or retired firefighters, emergency medical service providers, and their immediate family members who have been diagnosed with cancer. We deliver valuable post-diagnosis resources followed by unique badge to badge, one-on-one mentorship from one of our 220 fire-service mentors who have first-hand knowledge about battling cancer. They s

hare their survivor’s journey about their particular types of cancer, their own experiences with testing and treatments, and offer valuable insight into the recovery process. Within days, we deploy an FCSN signature toolbox free of charge. Our toolbox contains valuable resources, including our comprehensive Firefighter’s Guide to Cancer Survivorship, to help you stay organized, informed, and effectively communicate with your doctors, loved ones, and brothers and sisters in the fire service. Most importantly, the toolbox will remind you every day that you are not alone. Our dedicated team will be by you and your family’s side from diagnosis, through treatment to recovery. Disclaimer: The Firefighter Cancer Support Network is a volunteer group of cancer survivors, whose objective is to provide timely support to Fire Department employees (and immediate family members) diagnosed with any form of cancer, or who are dealing with ongoing cancer issues. Our mission is to provide comfort, strength and hope through our own personal experiences. We will also provide other support options such as the Department Chaplains, Behavioral Health Services and other cancer support programs. 🚒🏃‍♂️ As a best practice, turnout gear should be used for the incidents it was designed for—not for workouts, stair climbs, or fitness training.

🔥 Turnouts are exposed to products of combustion, diesel exhaust, soot, heavy metals, and other hazardous contaminants throughout their service life.

🧼 Even when cleaned properly, contaminants and carcinogens may still remain on the gear.

⚠️ PFAS (“forever chemicals”), historically used in some firefighter PPE components and moisture barriers, have been associated with adverse health effects and are an ongoing area of concern within the fire service.

💪 Want the challenge? Use PT gear, a weighted vest, or other approved fitness equipment instead.

✅ Train hard.
✅ Train smart.
✅ Reduce unnecessary exposures.

Use your PPE for the incidents that require it per your department’s SOPs/SOGs.

Your health today helps protect your future tomorrow.

When chiefs, company officers, and firefighters make cancer prevention a priority, it becomes part of the mission—not an option.

The cancer problem won’t improve by chance. It improves when leadership drives accountability, education, and action every day. 💪

Every day, firefighters risk their lives by exposing themselves to toxic chemicals, call after call. Certain areas of the body absorb carcinogens more easily, putting firefighters at higher risk of cancer. AB 1383, CPF's highest priority bill, helps confront these risks head-on. That’s why your support matters. Stand with us in Sacramento this June to show your support when it matters most. Visit cpfactivism.org to see how you can get involved.

"For many firefighters, cancer isn’t a question of if — it’s when. Every additional year on the job means more cumulative exposures, and their impacts are well-documented." - Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522 Firefighter Jeremy Gardella

The risks firefighters face are real, which is why supporting is so important. This critical legislation helps address occupational cancer risks by strengthening protections for those who put their health on the line to protect our communities.
