It was an honor to participate in the the VFW Post 5412 Memorial Day Commemoration at the Burke Centre Conservancy today. The reverent ceremony was a great way to mark this somber day and honor the sacrifices of those men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation.

I’m honored to present the 2019 Braddock District Lord and Lady Fairfax awards to Jeanne Kadet and Michael Perel. These Braddock residents have shown exceptional community spirit with their volunteerism and civic engagement through the years.

Jeanne, a retired social worker, is actively involved in multiple environmental and community groups. She serves as a Green Spring gardens master gardener, a Fairfax Master Naturalist, and a Braddock District Land Use and Environment Committee Charter Member and as the Braddock representative to the Tree Commission.

Michael uses his public safety background to give back. He volunteered for the Safety Office of the Fairfax County Police, organizes safe driving events for older adults and serves as vice chair of the FFX Area Commission on Aging.

Get a peek behind the scenes in this video of our Helicopter Unit finding an injured man on a hiking trail! 🚁

When this man didn't return home after a hike last night, his sister became worried as the temperature dropped. Our Fairfax 1 team began searching and was able to quickly locate the man. They then directed our officers and the Fire and Rescue team through the rough and dark terrain to reach him.

After having broken his leg, the man had been stuck on the hiking trail for several hours, but our officers were able to keep him stable and comfortable until the firefighters could use an ATV to get him out. We're happy to report that, thanks to this great collaboration and quick work, he is now safe!

In many many ways we owe the freedoms of our country due to the brave men and women who made it all possible for our country to endure. Our flag is an emblem of their sacrifice and symbol of our commemoration especially of those who died in service to our nation. Six soldiers died on 1 June 1967, not overseas in war, but serving our community, at a park on Braddock Road. The park is just west of the beltway and easy to get to, hope you can drop by and pay your respects, bring your children so they know what sacrifice and service to community and nation are all about.
