Toolbox Tuesday

Recently had a conversation with a customer, where their insurance was requesting verification that they have a commercial fire extinguisher.

There are just fire extinguishers. Not label such as residential or commercial.

Sure there are code requirements for commercial structures such as size and type. However there is not a commercial fire extinguisher label on a extinguisher.

Toolbox Tuesday.

Fire Sprinklers - TV is obviously not an accurate depiction of most things. Same goes with fire sprinklers. When a fire sprinkler system activates, all of the sprinkler heads DO NOT activate.

Sprinkler heads have a temperature specific activation. There is a fusible link, and when that link breaks, water will flow out.

Only heads where the link breaks is where the water will flow.

Toolbox Tuesday.

Ok im running out of fire extinguisher stuff, so venturing out.

Smoke alarms!!!!!

Do you have one?

Do you know they only have a 10 year life cycle?

On the label there is a manufacture date. You should replace them if they are over 10 years old.

If your smoke alarm is yellow instead of white, you are way past due for new smoke alarms.

In my past life as a fire investigator, my experiences, showed about 30 percent of house fires had working smoke alarms.

Test Them!!!

Replace Them!!

Maintain them!!

Your life literally depends on them.

Toolbox Tuesday

Last week I encountered a situation and thought I would speak on it.

In a commercial structure fire extinguishers are to be inspected monthly by the business/owner.

Annually, they are to serviced/maintained by a qualified person with training, certification and proper equipment.

I recently had a local business inform me that they service their own fire extinguishers. Even though the tags were 15 years past due.

The business/owner can only inspect them monthly, not service them annually unless you have someone that has the training, certification and equipment to provide that service.

Toolbox Tuesday

During serving extinguishers I have come across a few of these.

There are fire extinguishers that are disposable. They are indicated on the extinguisher that they cannot be refill and must be disposed after 12 years.

Look for these types of indicators to know if yours is disposable or not.

Another round of Toolbox Tuesday.

If you work in the food service industry in cooking, management or ownership.

Understand the fire protection system is installed to protect specific equipment by use of specific nozzles.

If the equipment is moved around in different positions, the system will not function correctly and may not suppress the fire.

During the semi-annual services this can cause your system to be non-compliant and may require your system to have costly repairs made. Yes, your system is to be inspected semi-annually.

Before adding, moving or replacing equipment, reach out for a consultation. Let's discuss your options.

Be safe.

Lithium battery fires are getting more common with the increasing use of them.

A typical ABC extinguisher is not suited for these.

Use a Class D extinguisher for lithium-metal fires. For lithium-ion (like in vapes or phones), a standard ABC dry chemical or CO2 extinguisher can suppress flames but may not stop the internal thermal runaway.

Toolbox Tuesday

Dont forgot. As a business, its your job to look at the extinguisher monthly and verify its still charged and ready to go.

The service tags have a spot on the back to initial each month that you do it.

This is actually not just a recommendation, its a requirement by the Fire Code.
