The City of Burton Police Department sends our thoughts and prayers to the City of Flint Police Department, family and friends of Captain Collin Birnie.

Captain Birnie has had a huge impact not only in the City of Flint, but also in police departments across the county. It would be hard to find a local officer that has not learned something throughout their career from Collin.

Rest in peace Capt.

With very heavy hearts, we regret to inform you that Flint PD Captain Collin Birnie died tonight as the result of a traffic crash while on duty. Captain Birnie served with the Flint Police Department for 26 years. His family is asking for privacy at this time. Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.

Good Afternoon. Today, I come to you with a virtual hat in hand. One of our own's brother-in-law, MSgt Leppek of the 127th Civil Engineer Squadron Selfridge Air National Guard Base suffered a catastrophic house fire last Saturday night (Jan 8th). This house fire will keep the Leppek's from their home from 6months to possibly a year. In addition to being displaced, the Leppek's beloved dogs suffered significant injuries during the house fire that warranted them being rushed to the Animal Hospital in East Lansing, where they were treated for smoke inhalation and burns. This GoFundMe page was created in an effort to try and recoup the Leppek's out of pocket expenses they've incurred during this tragedy. In addition to the recoupment, the Leppek's are trying to donate equipment to the Swartz Creek/Mundy Twp/Gaines Twp Fire Department's for the the life saving measures conducted on the dogs, and to replace their equipment. We ask that you keep the Burton Police Department and the Genesee County Sheriff's Office in your prayers. A Burton Police Officer and Genesee County Sheriff's Deputy were shot multiple times. Both are at the hospital receiving treatment.

As Police Officers, we put our lives on the line everyday. Today is a reminder just how true that is. We hope and pray for a full recovery of the Officer and Deputy.

A big thank you to all of the police departments that assisted. We can not thank you enough.

The Burton Police Department was contacted by the Bendle School District regarding a threat to shoot the school. The threat was made on Friday December 3rd and the shooting was to happen Monday December 6th.

The Burton Police were contacted by Genesee Township Police who received a similar threat to Kearsley's Armstrong Middle School by the same number.

The Burton Police and Genesee Township Police worked together with both school districts to investigate who made the threats and if the threats were credible.

The Burton School Liaison Officer did an outstanding job of identifying those responsible. Two 12 year old female students at Bendle Schools made the threats.

After interviewing both suspects, it was found that there was no known way for the two to carry out the threats. The students made the threats because they thought it was funny and wanted the schools to close.

While they did not have the ability to carry out the threats, they did terrorize and instill fear across two communities.

Both juveniles have been lodged at the Juvenile Detention Center pending charges.

****MISSING PERSON****

The Burton Police Department was contacted at approximately 8:33 pm on Friday December 3rd reference a missing person. Dylan Payne, 22 year old white male, was last seen at his residence near Saginaw and Bristol road at approximately 12:00 pm on Friday December 3rd. Dylan is mentally impaired and is not believed to be dressed for the weather. A clothing description is not known.

The Burton Police have been following up on leads, including hours of video but have not been able to locate Dylan.

Yes it is a daily reminder that we are freezing while you are enjoying warmth, but we still do it with a smile. Enjoy your vacation!!!!

Don't get your vehicle plowed in. Don't park in the street during a snow storm. Keep the dead end roads clear so they can turn around.

We have an amazing road crew. Help them out so they can keep our roads safe.

The trend that we are seeing with these reports near schools is that the most amount of speeders is just before schools starts and when when school is finished for the day. We ask those traveling to school to leave a little earlier so you are not in a rush.

A big thank you to our local Burton business Trio Paint for the beautiful remodel of our training room. They were a pleasure to work with and did amazing work.

Also we would like to thank Lt. Kissel and Kelli for the design and hard work putting the tables and chairs together, and Lt. Jones and Diane for the flooring.

On Saturday October 2, 2021 at approximately 4:35 am, the Burton Police Department was dispatched to 1220 Tanglewood Ln. for a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Ivbran Otis Martin Jr. 26 year old black male, in the living room with multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.

One female suspect was taken into custody on scene. A second male suspect was taken into custody at approximately 5:00 pm. Both suspects were lodged at the Genesee County Jail pending charges.

****I69 ROAD CLOSURE****

Eastbound I69 is closed at Belsay Rd exit. Cars are directed to exit at Belsay Rd and can get back on I69 at the Besay Rd entrance. The road is expected to reopen at approximately 3:00 pm.

This is a result of a two vehicle crash between a black Ford Eco Sport and a semi. The semi was struck in the gas tank leaking fuel. A hazmat team is on scene cleaning up the fuel.

The driver of the Ford has minor injuries. The driver of the semi did not have any injuries.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Deputy Darrell Henderson. Deputy Henderson passed away September 11th, 2021 at Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso due to complications from COVID that he likely contracted while on duty in the jail.

Deputy Henderson was a beloved co-worker with a big smile, and a heart of gold. He treated everyone with respect and brought great spirit to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Henderson was assigned to the corrections division, where he had 2 years of devoted service.

Thank you Darrell for your loyalty to your co-workers and your unwavering commitment to the Sheriff’s Office. You made work more enjoyable and will be dearly missed. Godspeed my friend.

We ask that you please keep Deputy Henderson, his family, and the members of the Sheriff’s Office in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Officer Terry Thompson EOW: July 5, 1983.

Terry devoted his life to serving his country and fellow man. After his military career, Terry joined the Burton Police Department and protected this great City. On July 5, 1983 Officer Terry Thompson gave his life protecting others.

Officer Thompson's sacrifice is felt at the department every day. His blood runs through us, his devotion encourages us, and his legacy drives us. We have continued his watch with the same pride and integrity he left us with. We will continue to live up to that standard and make him proud.

This has been a rough year for the family. Please keep them in your prayers.

FREEDOM

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.
