Michigan Safer Opioid Supply Initiative This is the initiative to help end deaths from fentanyl overdoses in Michigan and the United States. patients by nearly 100%! Over, and over. One Hundred? Ten? One?

Our 1st and PRIMARY goal is to increase the accessibility of Methadone for Michigan Patients - many who must make 3hr round trips daily just to survive. This is a group that supports the adoption of the Canadian Safer Opioid Supply Program into Michigan legislation in order to effectively eliminate the death toll from fentanyl overdoses. By providing a safe supply for individuals with Opioid Use D

isorder, Canada has eliminated deaths due to fentanyl by 80%, and effectively eliminated the mortality rate from overdose deaths for S.O.S. Additionally, we are promoting the bipartisan bill, Modernizing Opioid Treatment Access Act. It was introduced in May 2023 by Ed Markey (D-MA) and is gaining traction and support from legislators; the other politicians co-signing on this bill are Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, Rand Paul. This bill will help modernize methadone treatment for programs, providers, clinics, and patients by essentially aligning the restrictions to Methadone treatment to be similar to Buprenorphine/Suboxone. Current regulations require on-site dosing by patients at methadone clinics - which are not available for patients in rural areas and often require the patients to make a 3-4 hour commute to and from the clinics. The bill would allow doctors who currently prescribe buprenorphine, and are certified in Addiction Medicine, to prescribe methadone for patients to obtain at pharmacies, as well at patients to connect with providers via Telehealth video appointments. We need change immediately!

80,000 people die annually in the United States from fentanyl and synthetic opioid overdoses. This is the equivalent of one 747 Jumbo Jet, full of passengers, crashing every 45 hours! That is the equivalent of 90 Jumbo Jets crashing per year. And this is with the current systems in place: Naloxone access, MAT (Medication Assisted Treatment) like buprenorphine and methadone, access to rehabilitation centers, addiction counseling, and services. THESE ARE NOT WORKING! If this were actually 747 Jumbo Jets crashing once every 45 hours, how many would have to crash and people have to die before legislation did something about it? How many people have to continue to die? The laws and criminal policies are ONLY leading cartels, labs, and dealers to create STRONGER, more deadly fentanyl in order to maximize profits and reduce logistical issues. Canada realized this and adopted the European solution, which effectively solved the issue. We need your help in bringing awareness to our senators, congresspersons, and healthcare workers across Michigan and the United States. The argument is: "Giving safe opioids to addicts? That's going to make the problem worse," or "There is already Suboxone available,"
This could not be further from the truth. Because currently, without access to a safe supply or methadone therapy, individuals with Opioid Use Disorder will continue to obtain street fentanyl; and unfortunately, Suboxone does not work for about 50% of those who suffer from Opioid Use Disorder. Those of us who have lost loved ones understand the effect that overdose deaths have on families. What if that death could have been prevented? Reach out to your congressperson to help raise awareness of the Modernizing Opioid Treatment Access Act! Since the guidelines and policy that surround Methadone treatment have not been updated since the 1970s, the availability and access to methadone for individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) are often out of reach - with patients in rural communities often being forced to drive 2 hours (one-way) to the closest methadone clinic. Once they arrive, they often have to wait hours, as these clinics must provide services to around a thousand patients! This leads to a high rate of relapse. With this new bill, it would allow methadone treatment to be available to millions of people who suffer from OUD, and help fight the good fight against addiction and the fentanyl epidemic.

But we're back, baby! Michigan residents deserve a SAFE, reliable, accessible, and AFFORDABLE access to ALL opioid agonist assisted treatment options. Along with buprenorphine and naltrexone, METHADONE should also be offered by providers who are addiction specialists.

Methadone should be offered just as accessible and obtainable as medications like Suboxone and buprenorphine. If MAT licensed providers can oversee Bupe patients, they can oversee a methadone patient.

Take-Homes should be given 1-4 weeks at a time, given clean urine tests + weekly counseling. Also, methadone could be picked up at local pharmacies - eliminating commutes.

FIGHT FOR SAFER OPIOID SUPPLY AND TREATMENT OPTIONS IN MICHIGAN!

While the Modernizing Opioid Treatment Access Act died in congress last year, there are still plenty of organizations and Harm Reduction movements geared towards making Methadone more accessible for patients.

Methadone is considered the GOLD STANDARD for op**te treatment and medication assisted treatment. It has a much higher success rate than buprenorphine, which due to the fentanyl epidemic, is rarely treating individuals with OUD due to fentanyl being fat soluble. Because of this, it gets stored in the fat for up to 7 - 10 days after the patient quits using! So even if they detox for 3 days before they start buprenorphine....it's almost never enough time.

This sends the patient into PRECIPITATED WITHDRAWL! A very dangerous, SEVEARE form of opioid withdrawals (and sometimes life threatening)! Precipitated withdrawals require professional medical aid to treat, as people who are sent into P.W.s can become unconscious due to dehydration or seizures, and can suffer heart arrythmias or an infarction (heart attack) and/or stroke due to spikes in blood pressure.

Methadone does not cause Precipitated Withdrawals. An OUD patient can start methadone the next day after stopping opioids with minor symptoms.

Patients who take methadone every day do NOT get "high" from their medication. They just do not suffer opioid withdrawal symptoms and can lead a normal life, as methadone is a long acting agonist, lasting up to 24 hours until the patient needs another dose.

The Methadone also acts as a "blocker" preventing the patient from experience a "high" effect from opioids if they were to use.

This blocking effect leads to patients natually quitting on their own due to the waste of money and time using opioids causes while on methadone.

The issue is that people still feel that Methadone should not be prescribed, and that using it is just giving drugs to addicts. There are only 2000 clinics nationwide with patients often having to drive 400+ miles daily round trip to methadone and recovery centers across the United States just to receive their daily methadone dose.

Because of federal regulations, most methadone clinics consider doctor prescribed THC and ma*****na a "drug", which prevents them from receiving "take home doses" - or doses that patients can receive in leu of daily trips to teh clinic. Patients can "earn" up to 30 days of take home doses with time and adherance to the program.

Regardless of this, patients should be able to receive daily dosing at pharmacies, and able to receive at least 3-7 days of take-home doses at a time if they live over 100 miles from the nearest clinic.

This often requires patients are unable to work a job, since most clinics require morning attendance. Also, it takes away from productive lifestyle and their families.

PEOPLE, ADDICTS, HARM REDUCTION WORKERS! LEND ME YOUR EARS!!!!

Contact your congressperson or Michigan senator to let them know we need legislation reform for Methadone Treatment - similar to Buprenorphine and Suboxone. The Methadone laws have not been changed since 1970 - before fentanyl - before the opioid epidemic - before 100,000 deaths in America annually from overdoses. The current Methadone policies are not working! They need fixed.

Many people have to drive 2-3 hours ONE WAY just to get their daily dose. And that doesn't include waiting in understaffed clinics, waiting to receive their dose, or 1-2 hour counseling sessions. If they leave at 8am, they often don't get home until after 5pm. How can somebody have a job, or take care of their family, or support their children or homes with these policies? Daily doses? For MONTHS!? IT'S ABSURD!

Doctors specializing in Addiction Medicine should be able to prescribe methadone like Suboxone - starting with a 3-4 day dose, and if they do well, their dose will be increased with weekly visits. If they continue to do well, their dose will increase a bit more with 2-week take homes. Not this garbage where you have to wait 6 months of going to the clinic daily, driving across the state every day before u get a 2-week take home.

One dose of strong street fentanyl is 10x more deadly than some of the HIGHEST doses prescribed to methadone patients. And unfortunately, drugs like Buprenorphine and Suboxone often times don't even help fentanyl withdrawls at all.

And those of you complaining about the illegal immigrants bringing in the fentanyl? Most of it's brought in by AMERICANS! THAT'S RIGHT! WHO'S GOING TO GET SEARCHED AT THE BORDER?? A couple of Mexicans coming to the USA for a day pass? Or a family of white Americans in an RV coming back from a "Camping trip"?

It is AMERICANS bringing it in through the shipyards, the borders, international mail, and on planes. Less than 1% - 2% of illegal immigrants crossing the border have drugs on them - and it's usually ma*****na - which is legal in most states. Not bricks of fentanyl or co***ne! All you idiots who think the Mexicans are the problem - think again. WE ARE THE PROBLEM! THE ONLY WAY WE WILL FIX THIS EPIDEMIC IS TO REFORM METHADONE HEALTHCARE POLICIES AND LEGISLATION, offering increased access to Methadone and even offering Safe Supply programs liike Canada for people who are 100% Unsuseptable to drugs like Methadone and Buprenorphine. Buprenorphine was designed to come off Oxycontin and He**in. It does almost NOTHING for Fentanyl withdrawals! NOTHING!

Should we increase drug laws? That will probably lead to an increase in ODs and suicides. So if you want your 5-year-old daughter having to walk over dead bodies with needles sticking out of her arms on her way to school - maybe it's time we do something about Methadone access and safe supply reform in this country!
