We are pleased to announce that we have chosen the recipient of our 2017 Meteorology Scholarship. His name is Aaron Ayers and he will be a junior this Fall at the University of South Alabama. Aaron lives in Huntsville, Alabama, and has served as past president of the meteorology club at USA and has interned at Baron Services in Huntsville. He wants to pursue a job in broadcast meteorology when he graduates from college.

Please make plans to attend our third chapter meeting of 2017. Bob Dreisewerd, Senior Vice President of R&D, Forecast and Customer Services of Barons Services will be our guest speaker. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 8th, at the Hoover Public Library. We will be meeting in the Fitzgerald Room, which is located on the lower level of the library. We will meet at 6:30 pm for pizza and refreshments followed by the meeting which will start around 7:15 pm.

The Central Alabama Chapter of the NWA is pleased to announce that we are offering a college scholarship for the Fall of 2017. The scholarship is for a full-time student who is enrolled or going to be enrolled in meteorology. The only other qualification is that they are a full-time resident of Alabama. We hope to see you at tonight's meeting at Dale's Southern Grill in Hoover. We will begin with a dinner at 6:30 p.m, followed by a presentation from Dr. Tim Coleman. He is currently involved with the Severe Weather Institute at UAH and has many publications involving gravity waves and boundary interactions. Tim will discuss the McCalla tornado that occurred on March 1, 2016, and he will also talk about Vortex SE.

NWA Chapter Meeting with Guest Speaker Tim Marshall

We’re excited about our first 2017 meeting tomorrow night (Tuesday) at Vulcan Park. Tim Marshall will be visiting as our guest speaker. The event kicks off at 6PM and we will be meeting in the conference room in the museum. When you enter the building take the stairs to your right and we will have a table setup at the conference room entrance for collecting annual dues ($25.00) or a $10.00 donation. We will have a meet and greet followed by the presentation. There are two ways to pay membership dues. It does use PayPal so there will be an additional small charge that goes directly to PayPal. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow night!

Please make plans to attend the first meeting of 2017 on Tuesday, January 24th. We are excited to have Tim Marshall as our guest speaker. Tim is a renowned speaker within the meteorological community and avid storm chaser. He will certainly have some incredible stories and images of his many days spent chasing tornadoes.

The meeting will take place in the conference room at Vulcan Park. We will have a "Meet and Greet" from 6 pm until 630 pm and there will be some business items to discuss before Tim begins his presentation. Some light refreshments will be provided. We are asking everyone for a $10 donation to help defray the costs of bringing in a speaker like Tim Marshall. Tim does not charge a speaker fee, but there are costs involved in bringing him from Dallas, Texas. The $10 donation will only be collected at the meeting location. However, if you pay your 2017 membership dues of $25, the $10 donation will be waived.

There are two ways to pay membership dues. We hope you can join us for our 3rd meeting of the year on Thursday at 12PM. Dr. Jason Senkbeil from the University of Alabama Geography Department will be our featured speaker. Jason will talk about his work on a method to forecast maximum EF scale tornado intensity using a combination of established severe weather parameters. The meeting will take place at the conference room at the Shelby County Airport. Pizza and drinks will be provided for $5 per person. You're also invited to stop by the NWS office after the meeting to get a glimpse of the new operations set-up. Please share and help spread the word!

We want to thank Tony Lyza from the University of Alabama for serving as our featured speaker at the 2nd meeting of 2016. Tony kicked off the meeting with an in-depth look into studies of tornadoes and QLCS development over north Alabama. He also talked about terrain interactions and lessons learned from the first VORTEX Southeast. Tony says the team at UAH is already in the planning stages for a second VORTEX Southeast next spring and the team plans on focusing on storm and tornado events within the higher terrain region of northeast Alabama. Stay tuned for future announcements regarding our next 2016 meeting.

Join us tomorrow night at 6:30 PM for our 2nd meeting of 2016 at Dale's Southern Grill in Hoover. Our featured speaker will be PhD Candidate Tony Lyza from UAH SWIRL. Tony is currently researching behaviors of tornadoes in the presence of significant topography. He is also coordinating the forecast support for VORTEX-SE and will share some preliminary results from deployments made this Spring. The Central Alabama Chapter of the National Weather Association is pleased to announce that we are offering two college scholarships for the Fall of 2016. Each scholarship will be worth $500. The scholarships are available to undergraduate or graduate students who are a full-time resident of Alabama and attend an accredited college or university that offers a degree in atmospheric science or meteorology.

Information on how to apply for these scholarships is available on the Central Alabama NWA web site. Please help spread the word about this opportunity to a future meteorologist!

Continue submitting your questions in the comments below for our panel of local TV Meteorologists through the weekend. We are excited to have James Spann, Jerry Tracey, Mark Prater, and JP Dice joining us!

Our Panel Discussion with local TV Meteorologists is less than a week away! Have you ever wanted to ask a TV Meteorologist a question? This is your chance!

Please post your questions here by Thursday night, Sept 17th for our panel, including long-time Birmingham Meterologists James Spann and Jerry Tracey.

On Monday, Sept 21st, join us at 7pm at Vulcan Park and Museum. Arrive early to tour the museum and park. Simply tell the attendant you are with the NWA for free admission. Exciting news about our next chapter meeting!

On Monday, Sept 21, we will have a Panel Discussion with local TV Meteorologists driven by your questions! Post your questions to be answered by our participants to our page. Questions will be accepted through Thursday, Sept 17th.

The Panel Discussion will begin at 7PM, but you may come as early as you like to explore Vulcan Park and Museum. Tell the attendant at the ticket booth you are there for the NWA Event, and you will not be charged admission to the park and museum. http://visitvulcan.com/

Admission to the panel discussion for non-members and members who have not paid 2015 dues is $10 and will be collected inside the meeting room. Admission for members who have paid their 2015 dues is covered. Bottled water and soft drinks will be provided.

Greetings Member!

This is a friendly reminder of the terrific opportunity for community outreach tomorrow at the 2014 FOX 6 Weatherfest at the McWane Science Center. All members are encouraged to attend and help promote the chapter. We will have a table there and will be answering any questions people may have about what we do as a chapter.

Weatherfest is tomorrow, April 26, 2014, from 10 AM to 2 PM in Downtown Birmingham.

This is one of the various community outreach programs that we will be embracing this year. The event is open to everyone.

Membership is open to anyone interested in meteorology and its related fields and pays the annual dues. Currently, we have members from the NWS, media, other related fields, as well as students. Members are not required to join the national NWA, but national membership is required to be elected for President, Vice-President, and Secretary/Treasurer. Membership dues are $25. The first meeting of the 2019 calendar year will take place on Monday evening, August 5th, from 6:30 pm-8:00 pm at the 2020 building in Birmingham. Jason Holmes, from NWS Birmingham, will be discussing his presentation: The Development of a Dixie Alley Mean Tornado Sounding. This will be featured in a poster presentation at the Annual NWA Conference in Huntsville in September. Be sure to show up a few minutes early to meet and mingle with other members which include TV and NWS meteorologists. We'll have some light snacks and refreshments available during the entire meeting. I hope you have a great day and I hope to see you Monday evening.
