📣🛼ANNOUCEMENT: Final Rollerskate at the Gipp this Friday 9/4/26

Due to summer winding down and school starting back up, this Friday 9/4 will be the last rollerskating session of the Summer 2026. We enjoyed seeing folks and families show up to skate and have fun! We plan to continue facilitating open rollerskating/rollerblading at the Gipp Arena every summer. We also hope to have rental roller skates/ rollerblades available in the near future as well.

Come out to the Gipp Arena this Friday from 6-9pm to skate to some fun tunes one last time!🎶🛼

Before he was a legend, George Gipp was a Laurium boy who would rather play baseball and shoot pool than suit up for football. 🏈

Born in Laurium in 1895, up in the copper country, Gipp almost did not go out for the game at all. Knute Rockne spotted him drop kicking a ball across a field and talked him onto the Notre Dame squad. What followed still sits in the record books. Gipp ran for 2,341 yards, a mark that stood for more than fifty years, and became Notre Dame's first Walter Camp All American, a halfback who could run, pass, and punt with anybody in the country. 💛

An illness took him in December of 1920, only 25 years old, weeks after his final game. Eight years later Rockne stood in a locker room and asked his team to win one for the Gipper, and a kid from the Keweenaw became four of the most famous words in American sport. 🌲

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL – CERTIFIED GRANT ADMINISTRATOR (MSHDA CDBG - Homeowner Rehabilitation Grant)

LAURIUM VILLAGE CERTIFIED GRANT ADMINISTRATOR REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS:

The Village of Laurium is seeking proposals from Certified Grant Administrators for management, environmental review, and administrative services required for implementation of a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funded through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA). The project consists of the rehabilitation of approximately fifteen (15) to twenty (20) homes, with a projected average budget per home ranging from $10,000-$25,000.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

MSHDA’s CDBG funds are awarded to municipalities to support a range of housing related activities, classified as Reconstruction, Homeowner Rehabilitation, Infrastructure, Rental Rehabilitation, and Manufactured Housing. The Village of Laurium will utilize CDBG funds for activities classified under “Homeowner Rehabilitation.” These activities are meant to preserve affordable owner-occupied housing units through offering low-and-moderate-income homeowners, those making less than 80% of the area median income (AMI), grant funds to address health and safety concerns and maintenance issues. Eligible project costs are the actual costs of rehabilitating housing and soft costs, including but not limited to interior and exterior improvements to meet code requirements, roof repair or replacement, siding, windows, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and insulation.

The Village of Laurium would like to congratulate our newest Laurium Police Officer, Ariel White, on graduating from the NMU Police Academy. Prior to attending the police academy, Ariel served 20 years in the United States Army.

Laurium PD is excited to bring Ariel on board, and to bring our Department up to full staff. In three years, Laurium PD has gone from three full/part-time officers on the roster to six officers. Please help us in welcoming Officer White to Laurium!

November Millage Proposal (DPW Equipment):

During last night’s Village Council special meeting, the Village Council amended the public works equipment ballot language and it also reduced the proposed millage rate from its original millage rate.

Due to doing these two items, the public works equipment millage will be treated as a new millage replacing an expiring millage instead of a millage renewal. The proposed millage will read as follows on the November ballot:

VILLAGE OF LAURIUM
MILLAGE PROPOSAL

The Village of Laurium proposes to replace a prior approved, expiring Department of Public Works equipment millage levy of 2.50 mills ($2.50 per $1,000 of state taxable value) for years 2022 through 2026, inclusive, at a reduced amount as described below.

Shall the Village of Laurium levy a new, additional millage of up to 2.25 mills ($2.25 per $1,000 of taxable value) for a period of 5 years (2027 through 2031, inclusive) for the purpose of purchasing, upgrading, repairing, and maintaining Department of Public Works equipment and other Department of Public Works expenses, which is estimated to raise $79,000 in the first year of the levy, and shall the Village of Laurium be authorized to levy said millage?

[] Yes
[] No

This proposal seeks a .25 mill reduction from the previously approved original millage, and is the second millage reduction/proposal that has been discussed this year by the Laurium Village Council. 1.00 mill was previously reduced this year regarding the fire apparatus millage.

If you have any questions regarding millages or the November ballot initiative, please reach out to the Village of Laurium at 906-337-1600.
