NOTICE
CANAAN, BEECHER FALLS, AND LEMINGTON RESIDENTS

The Household Hazardous Waste Event for Canaan, Beecher Falls & Lemington residents will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm and on Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 8:00am to 1:00pm at the Canaan Transfer Station – 186 Treatment Plant Road, Canaan, VT 05903.

The list of acceptable items can be picked up at either the Transfer Station, Town Office or found on our Town website http://www.canaan-vt.org.

This event and the one in May were made possible by a generous $3,000 grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Solid Waste Program.

PART-TIME HIGHWAY & GENERAL MAINTENANCE POSITION
Town of Canaan, Vermont

The Town of Canaan is accepting applications for a part-time Highway and General Maintenance employee. This position is expected to average approximately 24–30 hours per week during the spring, summer, and fall. From November through April, the position may average close to 40 hours per week depending upon weather and winter maintenance needs.

This position may be filled independently or combined with the Town’s part-time Water and Wastewater position for a qualified applicant interested in working across both departments.

Job Summary

The employee performs work involving the operation and maintenance of the Town Highway Department and assists with the general maintenance of Town buildings, facilities, and grounds.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Snowplowing and sanding Town roads and parking areas;
Road grading, ditching, road repair, and culvert work;
Mowing, trimming, brush cutting, and chainsaw operation;
Operating and maintaining trucks, equipment, and hand tools;
Performing minor maintenance and repairs on Town equipment and facilities; and
Assisting other Town departments when necessary.

Winter snow removal requires availability outside regular working hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The employee will be expected to participate in the Town’s winter on-call schedule and respond to weather-related and other emergencies.

Qualifications

Applicants with experience with snowplowing, equipment operation, road maintenance, construction, landscaping, mechanical work, or a related field are preferred. Applicants must be able to work safely and independently while maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, Town departments, outside agencies, and the public.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent;
Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record;
Ability to pass required drug and alcohol testing;
Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions; and
Willingness to learn, follow instructions, and work cooperatively as part of a team.

Compensation

Hourly wage will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Thank you to all who came over to the Canaan Community Forest yesterday to join us with disc golf, hiking, chatting and having some refreshments!! We hope everyone had a good time! The course will remain set up until the end of October. If you need discs, email [email protected] or call 802-735-4711. The first three “holes” are located at the large permanent “Canaan Community Forest” sign. Cross the ATV trail, and head up to the parking lot. Saw your post. Follow the trail out of the field and playing your way up to the sugarhouse. The 9th “hole” is at the base of the Sugar House on Green Hill Rd.

Next event will be Plein Air and more on September 19, rain date September 20. More info will be coming soon!!😊

Town Office and Department Closures:

The Town Office will be closed, close early, or open late on the following days:
August 21, 2026 - Closed for an appointment.
August 28, 2026 - Closing at 10:00 A.M. for a meeting.
August 31, 2026 - Open from 10:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.
September 1, 2026 - Closed for Vacation.
September 2, 2026 - Open from 10:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.
September 3, 2026 - Closed for Vacation.
September 4, 2026 - Open from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.

During the open days, my wonderful assistant, Jody, will make sure that all of your calls and questions are answered and that payments are received. When the office is closed, please feel free to utilize the overnight deposit box. It will be checked regularly.

All Town Departments will be closed on September 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day.
