Today, I sent a letter to the PUCT and ERCOT asking them to work with us on two issues that deserve more attention: how data centers affect local communities, and how landowners are treated when major transmission lines are proposed.

West Texas needs power. We also need a process that gives local officials and landowners a voice.

We know from experience just know how quickly hot, dry days can turn into a dangerous fire situation.

With wildfire conditions elevated in parts of Texas, be careful outdoors. Pay attention to the wind, use good judgment with equipment and anything that creates a spark, and take a few minutes to talk through a fire plan with your family.

Texas Tax Free Weekend! Friday, August 7 through midnight Sunday, August 9.

The Legislature established this sales tax holiday in 1999 to give Texas families a break on back-to-school expenses.

This year, Texas families are expected to save $142.5 million in state and local taxes over three days.

Clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100 are exempt from the state sales tax. You can shop in stores, online, by phone, or by mail. The purchase just has to be completed by midnight Sunday.

Since 1999, Texans have saved more than $2 billion through this holiday. Stock up this weekend.

Robin and I had a great visit last weekend with the firefighting pilots and crew stationed in Canadian.

Matt Rutledge and Louis Browning, pilot and crew chief for Tanker 821 with Rutledge Airborne. Adam Towe and Alan Riney, pilot and crew chief with GB Aerial Fire.

In drought conditions with burn bans across the entire district, having them stationed in Canadian means a fire that might have burned thousands of acres gets attacked in the first hour.

With burn bans in effect across HD 88 and drought conditions forecast through the fall, please be careful out there. One spark is all it takes.

Texas A&M Forest Service has purchased three multi-mission aircraft for the state’s new wildland firefighting fleet.

These aircraft will help detect fires earlier, track changing conditions, provide live video and mapping, and give firefighters a clearer picture of what is happening on the ground.

This is the second major aircraft purchase in recent weeks, following the purchase of two wildfire suppression helicopters.

During the 89th Legislative Session, we approved $257 million to purchase, operate, and maintain wildfire suppression aircraft. That funding is now being put to work.

Texas has relied for years on aircraft shared through federal agreements. A state-managed fleet gives Texas aircraft that can remain here and respond when wildfires threaten lives and property.

I’m proud we followed through on this commitment and are giving Texas A&M Forest Service the aircraft and technology they need to do their jobs and protect Texans.

Attended the Texas Public Power Association conference alongside 350 attendees from across the state last week. I was able to share updates as we head into the 90th legislative session and our priorities for Texas.

I was honored to receive the Public Service Leadership Award from the Texas Public Power Association. This award goes to elected officials who've shown commitment to the people they serve and to energy policy that benefits Texas families and businesses.

Representing House District 88 and the Texas panhandle in that room, among people who manage power for communities across this state, was an honor.

In West Texas, you don't have to look far to find a cowboy.

You'll find them checking water before sunrise, fixing fence in the summer heat, gathering cattle ahead of a storm, or lending a hand when a neighbor needs it. It's a way of life built on hard work, responsibility, faith, and keeping your word.

I'm grateful for the men and women who continue to live those values every day.

Attended a valuable New World Screwworm informational meeting in our district hosted by Texas Farm Bureau and Wheeler County Farm Bureau.

As concerns about this livestock threat continue, it was great to hear directly from experts on detection, prevention, response efforts, and what producers, veterinarians, and stakeholders can do to protect our Texas cattle industry.

Speakers included:
• Greg Buenger, DVM
• Dr. Elizabeth Susan, Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC)
• Justin Smith, Texas A&M AgriLife Beef Specialist
• Special Ranger Kris Ward, TSCRA

Key resources shared covered early detection signs (wounds that won’t heal, maggots, foul odor, etc.), proper sample collection/reporting to TAHC at (800) 550-8242, prevention strategies (fly control, wound management, facility repairs), and treatment withdrawal times.

Early detection and rapid reporting remain our best tools alongside the statewide sterile fly releases and coordinated efforts from USDA, TAHC, TPWD, and industry partners.

Ranchers: Check your animals frequently, especially newborns, maintain a strong relationship with your vet, and report any suspicious wounds immediately.

Grateful for the leadership and all the sponsors (Texas Farm Bureau, Wheeler County Farm Bureau, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, and Texas Cattle Feeders Association) in keeping us informed and prepared. It’s good to know we have plans in place and are working together to safeguard Texas agriculture.
